چکیده

The possibility to combine the use of acoustic emission and thermal emission as real-time monitoring techniques on carbon-epoxy composites is the subject of this paper. Tensile tests are therefore performed, using a cross-head speed not too high so to enable a reliable detection of acoustic emission signals, but suitable also for the needs of the thermal emission technique,. The latter technique, which requires a quasi-adiabatic loading to be applied on the material, is here employed with a quasi-thermographic concept, with the twofold objective of measuring the thermoelastic limit and investigating the local heat exchange produced by the loading event. The idea is therefore to use thermal emission as a predictive inspection tool and, as a consequence, to correlate in a synergetic way its data with acoustic emission outputs.

Transverse Crack Detection in 3D Angle Interlock Glass Fibre Composites Using Acoustic Emission

In addition to manufacturing cost and production rates, damage resistance has become a major issue for the composites industry. Three-dimensional (3D) woven composites have superior through-thickness properties compared to two-dimensional (2D) laminates, for example, improved impact damage resistance, high interlaminar fracture toughness and reduced notch sensitivity. The performance of 3D wove...

Application of Acoustic Emission Analysis for Damage Investigations in Fibre and Textile Reinforced Composites

For the verification of pertinent failure and damage models of fibre and textile reinforced composites a clear identification of the particular damage entities is an essential premise. In such fibrous composites, the characteristic failure mechanisms are initiated on the microscale and result in a spontaneous release of elastic energy in terms of mechanical stress waves, the so-called acoustic ...

Tensile failure mechanisms in synthetic fibre-reinforced mortar

The ultimate tensile behaviour of fibre-reinforced cementitious composites is closely related to its failure mechanisms which in turn are dependent on reinforcement parameters such as fibre characteristics and the fibre/matrix interface properties. Based on the direct tensile tests of mortar specimens reinforced with various synthetic fibres, this paper attempts to explain such relationships an...

Characterization of Laccase-Treated Kenaf Fibre Reinforced Recycled Polypropylene Composites

Raw and laccase-treated kenaf fibre (KF) were used individually to reinforce recycled polypropylene (RPP) using extrusion and injection moulding. Laccase was used to modify the surface of the fibre to improve the compatibility between fibre and matrix. Enzyme concentration and soaking time were considered as the treatment parameters. Maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) was used with a...
