چکیده

Changes in thyroid function tests occur during pregnancy as a result of physiologic altera‐ tions in several factors controlling thyroid homeostasis. Urinary iodine excretion increases along with the increase in thyroxine binding globulin (TBG) concentrations. Human cho‐ rionic gonadotrophin (hCG) having structural homology with thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), stimulates thyroid cells. Thus, during pregnancy, functional activity and size of the thyroid gland are increased. Pregnancy is a stress test for the thyroid resulting in hypothyr‐ oidism in women with limited thyroidal reserve or iodine deficiency [1].
