چکیده

We report the detection of distributed CO(3–2) line emission in nearby normal galaxies. The CO gas is a well-known tracer of physical conditions in the emitting regions. The line transitions from higher energy levels (the J=3 level is 33 K above ground) are indicators of the presence of warm and dense gas. Until now this warm gas has been studied only in the nuclei of starburst galaxies. Using the Heinrich Hertz Telescope on Mt. Graham we were able to detect extended CO(3–2) line emission in more than ten normal galaxies. In this paper we present the results for the three galaxies M51, NGC 278 and NGC 4631. In particular, we compare our results with observations of the lower CO line transitions made with radio telescopes of similar angular resolution.

Warm molecular gas in nearby galaxies . Mapping of the CO ( 3 – 2 ) emission

Using the Heinrich-Hertz-Telescope on Mt. Graham, Arizona, we have observed several nearby galaxies in the CO(3–2) line. The CO(3–2) emission traces – in contrast to lower rotational transitions – a warmer and denser component of the molecular gas. We find that this emission is spatially extended in the target galaxies. The excitation conditions seem to vary with the location of the gas within ...

Warm and Cold Molecular Gas in Galaxies

New and archival interferometric 12CO(1→0) datasets from six nearby galaxies are combined with H2 2.122 μm and Hα maps to explore in detail the interstellar medium in different star-forming galaxies. We investigate the relation between warm (H2 at T ∼ 2000 K) and cold (CO at T ∼ 50 K) molecular gas from 100 pc to 2 kpc scales. On these scales, the ratio of warm-to-cold molecular hydrogen correl...

Emission in Spiral Galaxies: Warm Molecular Gas in Action?

Using the APEX sub-millimeter telescope we have investigated the CO(3−2) emission in five face-on nearby barred spiral galaxies, where three of them are high surface brightness galaxies (HSBs) lying at the Freeman limit, and two are low surface brightness galaxies (LSBs). We have positive detections for two of three HSB spirals and non-detections for the LSBs. For the galaxies with positive det...

Warm Molecular Gas in Dwarf Starburst Galaxies: CO(3-2) Observations

Eight dwarf starburst galaxies have been observed with the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO) telescope in the CO J= 3 2 transition. The galaxies observed are He 2-10, NGC 5253, NGC 1569, NGC 3077, Haro 2, Haro 3, II Zw 40 and Mrk 86; all but the last two are detected. The central regions of He 2-10 and NGC 5253 were mapped and a CO(2-1) spectrum of NGC 5253 was obtained. The error weighte...

ALMA Explorations of Warm Dense Molecular Gas in Nearby LIRGs

We present results of ALMA (Cycle-0) observations of the CO (6-5) line emission and the 435μm continuum of two nearby luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) NGC 34 (a major merger with an AGN) and NGC 1614 (a minor merger with a circum-nuclear starburst). Using receivers in the highest frequency ALMA band available (Band-9), these observations achieved the best angular resolutions (∼ 0′′.25) for AL...
