Melting as a String-Mediated Phase Transition

چکیده
We present a theory of the melting of elemental solids as a dislocation-mediated phase transition. We model dislocations near melt as non-interacting closed strings on a lattice. In this framework we derive simple expressions for the melting temperature and latent heat of fusion that depend on the dislocation density at melt. We use experimental data for more than half the elements in the Periodic Table to determine the dislocation density from both relations. Melting temperatures yield a dislocation density of (0.61 ± 0.20) b−2, in good agreement with the density obtained from latent heats, (0.66 ± 0.11) b−2, where b is the length of the smallest perfect-dislocation Burgers vector. Melting corresponds to the situation where, on average, half of the atoms are within a dislocation core.

The study of a two-dimensional (2-D) system started nearly half a century ago when Peierls and Landau showed the lack of long range translational order in a two-dimensional solid. In 1968, Mermin proved that despite the absence of long range translational order. Two-dimensional solids can still exhibit a different kind of long range bond orientation. During the last decade, fascinating theori...

Ultrafast crystal-to-liquid phase transition induced by femtosecond pulse laser excitation is an interesting material's behavior manifesting the complexity of light-matter interaction. There exist two types of such phase transitions: one occurs at a time scale shorter than a picosecond via a nonthermal process mediated by electron-hole plasma formation; the other at a longer time scale via a th...

We uncover a new transient regime that reconciles the apparent inconsistency of the Martins Shellard one scale damped string evolution model with the initial conditions predicted by the Kibble mechanism for string formation in a second order phase transition. This regime carries (in a short cosmic time ∼ .1tc) the dense string network created by the Kibble mechanism to the (dilute) Kibble regim...
متن کاملVortex lattice melting in 2D superconductors and Josephson arrays.
Monte Carlo simulations of 2D vortex lattice melting in a thin superconducting film (or alternatively an array of Josephson junctions) are performed in the London limit. Finite size scaling analyses are used to make a detailed test of the dislocation mediated melting theory of KTNHY. We find that the melting transition is weakly first order, with a jump in shear modulus very close to that predi...

The melting transition of Ce adatom superlattices stabilized by long-range substrate-mediated electronic interactions on Cu(111) and Ag(111) noble metal surfaces has been investigated by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, density functional theory calculations, and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. Intriguingly, owing to the interaction between Ce adatoms and substrate, these superla...
