sion of how SOAR might apply to the learning of language, its comprehension and production. Use is made here of the important notion of chunking that Newell rightly brings to the fore throughout his discussion of many different psychological processes. On the other hand, for those who have attempted to deal with the troublesome and intricate details of language learning, comprehension, or production, what is said is at the most a very general prolegomenon to some future genuine theory of language. It is perhaps my central criticism of the book that Newell can set before us what he claims is an exemplar of a unified theory of cognition and yet provide only a very sketchy treatment of language. Many psychologists and philosophers would argue that it is the capacity for the use of language that is the most cognitively discriminating feature of human cognition as opposed to that of other animals. Newell likes to mention various well-established experimental cognitive phenomena, and this Is something I commend. On the other hand, there must by now be more than 10,000 articles reporting substantial psycholinguistic data on language acquisition. There is no attempt on Novell's part to deal with any of this overwhelmingly large and complicated experimental literature. I do not mean to suggest that he should give us some kind of encyclopedic report on this literature, but I do mean to suggest that any candidate theory of cognition must come to terms with language in real detail in order to make a serious claim to being a prototheory of human cognition.

Response to Maniatis’ “Is a unified model of contrast and constancy possible? Reply to Gilchrist”
1. Maniatis claims that a unified explanation of lightness contrast and lightness constancy is not possible. But there is only one visual system and it exhibits both lightness contrast and lightness constancy. So obviously a unified theory is possible. 2. Maniatis claims there is ultimately no distinction between framework and layer theories, arguing that both theories acknowledge the existence...
متن کامل1 Finite Unified Theories Predictions and Dualities 1
N = 1, all-loop Finite Unified Theories (FUTs) are very interesting not only since they realize an old theoretical dream, but also due the remarkable predictive power of particular models as well as for providing candidates that might shed light in non-perturbative Physics. Here we discuss (a) the recent developments concerning the soft supersymmetry breaking (SSB) sector of these theories and ...
متن کاملSelecting Finite Unified Theories with Current Data
Finite Unified Theories (FUTs) are N = 1 supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories that can be made all-loop finite, leading to a severe reduction of the free parameters. We review the investigation of FUTs based on SU(5) in the context of low-energy phenomenology observables. Using the restrictions from the top and bottom quark masses, it is possible to discriminate between different models. Inclu...
متن کاملComparing Strengths and Weaknesses of Learning Theories
Introduction: Medical education is changing. Therefore, teachers need to evaluate their performance and try to maximize learning. Learning theories can provide insight in this important issue. This study aimed to review the strengths and weaknesses of learning theories including behavioral, cognitive and humanistic theories. Methods: In this study, some literatures related to learning theories...
متن کاملAn Architecture for Anaphora Resolution
In this paper, we describe the pronominal anaphora resolution module of Lucy, a portable English understanding system. The design of this mo;clule was motivated by the observation that, although there exist many theories of anaphora resolution, no one of these theories is complete. Thus we have implemented a blackboard-like architecture in which individual partial theories can be encoded as sep...
