Acoustics of Human Voice Production

چکیده

Human voice production is studied as an acoustic process inside the vocal tract using the wave equation for air, and compared with large-scale databases of simultaneously acquired microphone and electroglottograph signals. The following theories are confirmed: For voiced sounds, the process starts at glottal closures. Immediately before a glottal closure, there is a continuous airflow in the vocal tract. Each glottal closure abruptly blocks the air flowing into the vocal tract, excites a zero-velocity d’Alembert wavefront, which then resonates in the vocal tract to form an acoustic wave. Its waveform is determined by the geometrical configuration of vocal tract, thus represents instantaneous timbre. Kinetic energy of airflow is converted into acoustic energy. For plosives and affricates, the process starts at various places inside the vocal tract. The mechanism is similar to that of voiced sounds. Linear superposition of those acoustic waves plus noise-based disturbances constitutes speech signal. Using Kramers-Kronig relations, Fourier analysis and Laguerre functions, digitized speech signals can be converted into a parametric representation in terms of timbre vectors; and the speech can be regenerated from those timber vectors, possibly with a variety of desirable modifications. Examples of voice transformation are shown.

Computational Modeling of Fluid–Structure–Acoustics Interaction during Voice Production

The paper presented a three-dimensional, first-principle based fluid-structure-acoustics interaction computer model of voice production, which employed a more realistic human laryngeal and vocal tract geometries. Self-sustained vibrations, important convergent-divergent vibration pattern of the vocal folds, and entrainment of the two dominant vibratory modes were captured. Voice quality-associa...

Education system in acoustics of speech production using physical models of the human vocal tract

In this paper, we present and discuss an educational system in the fields of acoustics and speech science using a series of physical models of the human vocal tract. Because education in acoustics is relevant for several fields related to speech communication, it hosts students from a variety of educational backgrounds. Moreover, we believe that an education in acoustics is important for studen...

The rise of fixed pitch systems and the slide of continuous pitch: A note for emotion in music research about portamento

Background in music psychology and history. Psychological and historical factors such as the desire to imitate, and the development of music notation systems and sound recordings, each appear to have contributed to the demise and suppression of portamento (pitch bending) in music, and the singing voice in particular. Portamento offers potential expressive resources in both music and speech, and...

Cause-effect relationship between vocal fold physiology and voice production in a three-dimensional phonation model.

The goal of this study is to better understand the cause-effect relation between vocal fold physiology and the resulting vibration pattern and voice acoustics. Using a three-dimensional continuum model of phonation, the effects of changes in vocal fold stiffness, medial surface thickness in the vertical direction, resting glottal opening, and subglottal pressure on vocal fold vibration and diff...
