O ct 1 99 9 1 The galactic environment of the Sun

چکیده
The interstellar cloud surrounding the solar system regulates the galactic environment of the Sun and constrains the physical characteristics of the interplanetary medium. This paper compares interstellar dust grain properties observed within the solar system with dust properties inferred from observations of the cloud surrounding the solar system. Properties of diffuse clouds in the solar vicinity are discussed to gain insight into the properties of the diffuse cloud complex flowing past the Sun. Evidence is presented for changes in the galactic environment of the Sun within the next 10–10 years. The combined history of changes in the interstellar environment of the Sun, and solar activity cycles, will be recorded in the variability of the ratio of largeto medium-sized interstellar dust grains deposited onto geologically inert surfaces. Combining data from lunar core samples in the inner and outer solar system will assist in disentangling these two effects.

UNJ1025−0040 is a quasar at z = 0.6344 that shows an extremely bright post starburst population of age ∼ 400 Myr (Brotherton et al. 1999). Images of UNJ1025−0040 show a nearly stellar object 4. 2 SSW of the quasar. We present imaging and spectroscopy that confirm that this object is a companion galaxy at redshift z = 0.6341. We estimate an age of ∼ 800 Myr for the dominant stellar population in...

We review the various techniques used to constrain the Galactic halo mass profile for radii ∼> 20 kpc with particular emphasis on identifying a self-consistent halo model and resolving the apparent discrepancies present in the literature on this subject. We collate published results and demonstrate that they are all consistent with a Galactic halo that is nearly isothermal with a characteristic...

The Halo Galactic Globular Clusters (GCs) lying inside the solar circle (Inner , R GC < 8Kpc, [Fe/H] < −0.8) are shown to keep no record of the strong correlation between GC absolute integrated magnitudes and core parameters (concentration and central density) clearly detected for the Halo GCs lying outside this circle (Outer) as well as (at lower statistical significance) for those belonging t...

The Caltech Faint Galaxy Redshift Survey has collected ∼2000 spectra taken with multi-slit masks using the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph at the Keck Observatory (Oke et al. 1995) in two widely separated fields on the sky, each ∼1 x 1 deg 2. Most of these objects are faint field galaxies; about 10% are Galactic stars and about 1% are broad-lined AGNs. I summarize the small scale clustering...

We study the lensing of neutrinos by astrophysical objects. At the difference of photons, neutrinos can cross a stellar core; as a result the lens quality improves. While Uranians alone would benefit from this effect in the Sun, similar effects could be considered for binary systems. Chercheur I. I. S. N. Directeur de recherches du F. N. R. S.
