The carbon abundance in main-sequence B-type stars towards the Galactic anti-centre

چکیده

Differential carbon abundances (based on the C ii doublet at 6580Å) are presented for eight early type stars, towards the Galactic anti-centre. All the stars have similar atmospheric parameters with effective temperatures in the range 25000 − 29000 K and surface gravities between log g = 3.9− 4.3 dex. The derived photospheric abundances vary by up to 0.6 dex, and with the exception of one star, RLWT-41, the differential abundances are found to be closely correlated with those of nitrogen. This implies that both elements may have been formed by similar mechanisms and that the lack of correlation between the nitrogen and oxygen abundances previously found in this sample is not directly due to CNO-processed core material being mixed to the stellar surface.

Iron abundances from optical Fe iii absorption lines in B-type stellar spectra

The role of optical Fe iii absorption lines in B-type stars as iron abundance diagnostics is considered. To date, ultraviolet Fe lines have been widely used in B-type stars, although line blending can severely hinder their diagnostic power. Using optical spectra, covering a wavelength range ∼ 3560 – 9200 Å, a sample of Galactic B-type main-sequence and supergiant stars of spectral types B0.5 to...

The Origin of Hvs17, an Unbound Main Sequence B Star at 50 Kpc

We analyze Keck ESI spectroscopy of HVS17, a B-type star traveling with a Galactic rest frame radial velocity of +445 km s in the outer halo of the Milky Way. HVS17 has the projected rotation of a main sequence B star and is chemically peculiar, with solar iron abundance and sub-solar alpha abundance. Comparing measured Teff and log g with stellar evolution tracks implies that HVS17 is a 3.91 ±...

The nature of hypervelocity stars as inferred from their galactic trajectories

We have computed the galactic trajectories of twelve hypervelocity stars (HVSs) under the assumption that they originated in the Galactic Centre. We show that eight of these twelve stars are bound to the Galaxy. We consider the subsequent trajectories of the bound stars to compute their characteristic orbital period, which is 2 Gyr. All eight bound stars are moving away from the centre of the G...

The origin of carbon , investigated by spectral analysis of solar - type stars in the Galactic Disk ⋆

Abundance analysis of carbon has been performed in a sample of 80 late F and early G type dwarf stars in the metallicity range −1.06 ≤ [Fe/H] ≤ 0.26 using the forbidden [C I] line at 8727Å. This line is presumably less sensitive to temperature, atmospheric structure and departures from LTE than alternative carbon criteria. We find that [C/Fe] decreases slowly with increasing [Fe/H] with an over...

More nitrogen rich B - type stars in the SMC cluster , NGC 330

High resolution spectra of seven early B-type giant/supergiant stars in the SMC cluster NGC330 are analysed to obtain their chemical compositions relative to SMC field and Galactic B-type stars. It is found that all seven stars are nitrogen rich with an abundance approximately 1.3 dex higher than an SMC main-sequence field B-type star, AV304. They also display evidence for deficiencies in carbo...
