Comparative Trends in Ethno-Regional Inequalities in Ghana and Nigeria: Evidence from Demographic and Health Surveys
نویسنده
چکیده
The paper compares measures of socio-economic inequality between population groups in Ghana and Nigeria using nationally representative survey data from the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS). In particular, the paper focuses attention on the politically salient north-south divide. Different dimensions of inequality such as education, employment, household wealth and child mortality as well as alternative group markers like ethnicity, religion, and region of residence are considered over time. The general conclusion is that in both countries the socio-economic divide between the ’north’ and the ’south’, however defined, remains very deep despite the efforts by postcolonial administrations to redress the gap. In terms of cross-country comparisons, the greater degree of overlap between regional and cultural identities in Nigeria, coupled with a much more even demographic split between northern and southern regions than in Ghana, is likely to make the north-south divide particularly visible to people and to their political elites in the north. Furthermore, whereas in Ghana inequalities have, with very few exceptions, remained stable over the decade 1993-2003, in Nigeria changes in group inequalities over time have been more dramatic, particularly in women’s educational attainment and child mortality rates (CMR).

Magnitude and trends of inequalities in antenatal care and delivery under skilled care among different socio-demographic groups in Ghana from 1988 – 2008
BACKGROUND Improving maternal and reproductive health still remains a major challenge in most low-income countries especially in sub-Saharan Africa. متن کاملTesting for fertility stalls in demographic and health surveys
This study compares two methods for testing fertility trends and fertility stalls using Demographic and Health Surveys data. The first method is based on linear regression and uses the equivalence of period and cohort estimates with the same cumulative fertility at age 40, the same number of births, and the same distribution of women by parity. The second method is based on logistic regression....
متن کاملThe Health Mobility Is All True Mobility?; Comment on “Regional Incentives and Patient Cross-border Mobility: Evidence From the Italian Experience”
In their study, Brenna and Spandonaro analyzed the mobility into Italian regions. In particular, it analyzes the situation of 5 regions, with very different backgrounds. With this paper, we try to better define the meaning of health mobility and to find its underlying causes. Furthermore, we propose a strategy that could help in controlling mobility flows that currently are the source of health...
متن کاملAn analysis of socio-demographic patterns in child malnutrition trends using Ghana demographic and health survey data in the period 1993–2008
BACKGROUND A small but growing body of research indicates that progress in reducing child malnutrition is substantially uneven from place to place, even down to the district level within countries. Yet child malnutrition prevalence and trend estimates available for public health planning are mostly available only at the level of global regions and/or at country level. To support carefully targe...
