Running head: INTERPRETATION OF DIFFICULTY AND EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING 1 Interpretation of Difficulty’s Impact on Shifting and Inhibition Ability
نویسنده
چکیده
Past research on identity-based motivation theory (Oyserman, 2007; 2009) has shown that people given an interpretation of difficulty as importance outperform those given an interpretation of difficulty as impossibility or those given no interpretation on school tasks (Smith, Novin, Elmore, & Oyserman, under review). Paul, Smith, and Oyserman (2013) suggested that working memory may be a mechanism underlying these effects. The current research aims to explore whether other components of executive functioning, namely shifting and inhibition, act as additional contributors to interpretation of difficulty effects. College students were randomized to one of three conditions (interpretation of difficulty as importance, interpretation of difficulty as impossibility, or no interpretation control) and worked on a measure of shifting (Study 1) and a measure of inhibition (Study 2). Across studies, we found no significant differences on our measures. Implications are discussed. Words: 137

The Development of Metaphor Comprehension and Its Relationship with Relational Verbal Reasoning and Executive Function
Our main objective was to analyse the different contributions of relational verbal reasoning (analogical and class inclusion) and executive functioning to metaphor comprehension across development. We postulated that both relational reasoning and executive functioning should predict individual and developmental differences. However, executive functioning would become increasingly involved when ...
متن کاملLanguage ability, executive functioning and behaviour in school-age children
BACKGROUND Many children with language impairment present with deficits in other areas, including executive functioning (EF), attention and behaviour. Similarly, many children receiving services for attention or behaviour problems have deficits in language ability. AIMS To evaluate the relations among EF, language ability and behaviour problems in a sample of school-age children with a wide r...
متن کاملParental Ratings of Children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder on the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (brief)
Children with FASD typically display deficits on cognitive measures of executive functioning, but the goal of this study was to examine performance of children with FASD on a behavioral measure of executive function using the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF). Participants were 64 children (aged 5 to 16 years) with FASD. These children showed significant deficits on the BR...
متن کاملThe impact of age, ongoing task difficulty, and cue salience on preschoolers' prospective memory performance: the role of executive function.
The current study examined the impact of age, ongoing task (OT) difficulty, and cue salience on 4- and 5-year-old children's prospective memory (PM) and also explored the relation between individual differences in executive function (working memory, inhibition, and shifting) and PM. OT difficulty and cue salience are predicted to affect the detection of PM cues based on the multiprocess framewo...
متن کاملInteractions between levels of attention ability and levels of bilingualism in children's executive functioning.
Attention difficulty is associated with poor performance on executive functioning (EF) tasks, yet EF is enhanced in bilingual children. However, no research to date has investigated the possible interaction between bilingualism and attention ability in children to determine the consequences for EF when both are present. We assessed a sample of typically developing children who were 8 to 11 year...
