The Economics and Benefits of Cable Magnetization
نویسندگان
چکیده
As the submarine cable industry has moved from copper to optical fibers for signal transmission, the cables have become increasingly smaller and the amount of ferromagnetic material in them has been drastically reduced. Many festooned cables are being constructed so that they contain no copper or other means for electrical signal transmission in them at all. These cables have become increasingly difficult to locate and follow underwater. While at the same time, the industry has been forced to move toward deeper depth of burial (below the seabed) and deeper overall cable burial (water depth) in order to protect these vital commerce-enabling pathways under the sea. The owners and regulators are also demanding proof positive positioning and depth verification at time of installation and during the life cycle. The net result of these circumstances has been an increase in installation times (and costs), an increase in repair times (and costs) and often noncompliance to project verification requirements.

Bundling, product choice, and efficiency: Should cable television networks be offered à la carte?
We conduct a numerical analysis of bundling’s impact on a monopolist’s pricing and product choices and assess the implications for consumer welfare in cable television markets. Existing theory is ambiguous: for a given set of products, bundling likely transfers surplus from consumers to firms but also encourages products to be offered that might not be under à la carte pricing. Simulation of ‘‘...
متن کاملEconomics of Interconnection: the Case of the Northwest European Electricity Market
In order to create an internal European market for electricity, interconnection lines between several European countries are being developed. The Dutch market, now only directly connected to the German and Belgian market, will be linked to the Scandinavian and British market in 2008 and 2010, respectively. Economically, these investment projects raise several fascinating questions. As the costs...
متن کاملStability Analysis and Robust PID Control of Cable Driven Robots Considering Elasticity in Cables
In this paper robust PID control of fully-constrained cable driven parallel manipulators with elastic cables is studied in detail. In dynamic analysis, it is assumed that the dominant dynamics of cable can be approximated by linear axial spring. To develop the idea of control for cable robots with elastic cables, a robust PID control for cable driven robots with ideal rigid cables is firstly de...
متن کاملControl of Scour Around the Piles with Using Cable and Collar at the River
In this study, in order to examine the joint of the cable and the collar in control of scour around the bridge piles, experiments were carried out in a rectangular plexiglass flume as a direct path. The experiments were carried out using three different cable diameters, three different thread angles and three rounds of the cable threaded at a steady current in clear water. The results of this s...
متن کاملInnovative approach to strata reinforcement in coal mines with reference to evaluation cable bolts shear strength
There is an increasing need to determine accurately the strength properties of tendons for an effective ground control on mines and underground structures as well as on modelling simulations. The strength properties of cables, used as cable bolts, have been evaluated mainly by their ultimate tensile strength, as this kind of test can be carried out in the field as well as in the laboratory. Onl...
