Abnormal diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease following corneal transplantations.

چکیده
BACKGROUND The value of magnetic resonance imaging of the brain in the diagnosis of iatrogenic cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease has been questioned. OBJECTIVE To illustrate the value of magnetic resonance imaging of the brain in the diagnosis of iatrogenic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. METHODS Case report. RESULTS A patient with a history of 3 corneal transplantations exhibited the alien hand sign on initial examination. Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed prominent cortical diffusion abnormalities. During the following months, the patient developed rapidly progressive dementia. The diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease was proven by brain biopsy. CONCLUSION Brain magnetic resonance imaging, particularly diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging, can be very helpful in the diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, even in suspected iatrogenic cases.

Abnormal diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance images in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
BACKGROUND Traditional imaging methods, including computed tomography, routine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and magnetic resonance spectroscopy, have not been particularly useful in the diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). Although abnormalities can be seen using these methods, the findings are evident only late in the disease or lack specificity or sensitivity. OBJECTIVE To des...
متن کاملDiffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in probable Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: a clinical-anatomic correlation.
BACKGROUND Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a rare transmissible disease that typically causes a rapidly progressive dementia and leads to death in less than 1 year. Although a few anecdotal reports suggest that diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging may help substantiate premortem diagnosis of CJD, detailed correlation between radiographic data and clinical, electrophysiologic, and me...
متن کاملDiffusion-Weighted MR Imaging in Biopsy-Proven Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease
OBJECTIVE To compare conventional and diffusion-weighted MR imaging in terms of their depiction of the abnormalities occurring in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively analyzed the findings of conventional (T2-weighted and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery) and diffusion-weighted MR imaging in four patients with biopsy-proven Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. The sign...

BACKGROUND Although more than 160 cases of iatrogenic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (iCJD) from human growth hormone (hGH) treatment have been documented, to our knowledge abnormal cerebellar findings on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have not been reported. OBJECTIVE To report a case of hGH-related iCJD with abnormal cerebellar MRI findings on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) and di...
متن کاملLateralized clinical and diffusion-weighted MRI abnormalities in a probable case of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
The usual clinical profile of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD) is subacute dementia, motor dysfunction and myoclonus. Occasionally, some patients present atypical clinical features. We report a case of probable sCJD in a 73-year-old man with a rapidly progressive lateralized neurologic dysfunction of the left hemisphere. In a few weeks the clinical picture deteriorated dramatically to ...
