Diabetes mellitus has many forms. Neonatal diabetes mellitus is one of the rarest, with a reported incidence of 1 in 450,000 live births.1 2 The first case was described by Kitselle (1 852) in his own newborn son, who subsequently died.3 In Northern Ireland, one case might be expected approximately every 16 years; the lastdocumented here was born in 1983.4 Several literature reviews have highlighted the characteristic clinical picture of this disease.
