Maximizing revenue in the airline industry under one-way pricing

چکیده
The paper describes a methodology that has been implemented in a major British airline to find the optimal price to charge for airline tickets under one-way pricing. An analytical model has been developed to describe the buying behaviour of customers for flights over the selling period. Using this model and a standard analytical method for constrained optimisation, we can find an expression for the optimal price structure for a flight. The expected number of bookings made on each day of the selling period and in each fare class given these prices can then be easily calculated. A simulation model is used to find the confidence ranges on the numbers of bookings and these ranges can be used to regulate the sale of tickets. A procedure to update the price structure based on the remaining capacity has also

An Empirical Study of Revenue Management Practices in the Airline Industry
Revenue management has been successfully implemented in the airline industry since the deregulation in 1978. There have been very few comprehensive, rigorous studies of its practices and impact, however. In this paper we examine how revenue management practices affect airline performances such as loadfactor and revenue, and how revenue management practices are implemented in different market st...
متن کاملOptimal pricing ladders for the sale of airline tickets
Pricing ladders are widely used in the airline industry to define the discrete set of prices that can be charged for seats on a flight. We consider the factors that affect the setting of these ladders for oneway economy tickets. The minimum and maximum fares are assumed to be fixed and we focus on maximising the revenue generated on a flight by changing the spacing of the intermediate fares. Th...
متن کاملWhat’s On The Table: Revenue Management And The Welfare Gap In The US Airline Industry
The past decade has been a difficult one for the US airline industry. On the one hand, airline profits have been highly variable with net losses over the last ten years standing in the tens of billions of dollars. On the other hand, consumers continue to complain of predatory pricing and other such tactics. Our goal here will simply be to get an estimate of what is possible moving forward. We a...
متن کاملRevenue Management and Capacity Planning
Broadly defined, revenue management (RM) is the process of maximizing revenue from a fixed amount of perishable inventory using “market segmentation” and “demand management” techniques. While RM is not new (in fact it is as old as commerce, e.g., haggling in a market can be considered a form of RM), the theory and practice of RM have seen significant scientific and practical advances in the las...
متن کاملMixed Integer Programming Model for Pricing in Telecommunication
Yield management has been successfully applied in the context of airline companies. However, so far, application to telecommunication industry have been scarce. Using Yield management principles, this paper investigates the new problem of maximizing revenue of telecommunications operator by setting prices on voice services. This pricing is based on available resource i.e. network load. We first...
