YYI1H GURJON OIL* By Surgeon-Major J. Dougam,, ii.d., Officiating Senior Medical Officer, Port Blair. Soon after I came to this settlement in March 1873,1 had occasion, in the ordinary course of duty, to visit the barrack occupied by tlie lepers, when the subject of their treatment forced itself upon my attention in such a manner that it wag next to impossible to cast it aside. In one corner of the ward a man named Gunga Ram was lying coved up by his blanket and when he moved, a swarm of flies rose with a " buzz this man had been in this condition for two years, just able to crawl from his corner at meal times and for other necessary purposes, which being attended to, he returned and resumed his wonted place and position in order to protect himself from his constant tormentors, the flies. The disease in his case was an advanced stage of tubercular leprosy, with ana;sthesia of the extremities?upper and lower? and front of the chest. The whole body was covered with tubercular elevations seated upon a hypertrophied skin, and the left leg and foot were much swollen and fissured, and there were open sores upon the fingers. His voice had that muffled sound peculiar to the advanced stage of leprosy, and his breathing was loud and thick. Senerassa was just able to move about on his hands and hips, on account of large dirty ulcers on the soles of both feet.

for ordinary labour, the same diet as the labouring convicts, they only receive the reduced diet which is deemed sufficient for female convicts and men of the invalid gang.
