چکیده

Beginning in 1988, the Numerical Aerodynamic Simulation (NAS) organization at NASA Ames Research Center has studied the usability of highly parallel computers on computational uid dynamics and other aerophysics applications. Presently this organization operates a CM-2 with 32,768 nodes and an Intel iPSC/860 with 128 nodes. This note gives an overview of the experience in using these systems, highlights both strong points and weak points of each, and discusses what improvements will be required in future highly parallel systems in order that they can gain acceptance in the mainstream of scienti c computing. The author is with the NAS Applied Research Branch at NASA Ames Research Center, Mo ett Field, CA 94035.

NAS Applications and Advanced Architectures

This paper examines the applications most commonly run on the supercomputers at the Numerical Aerospace Simulation (NAS) facility. It analyzes the extent to which such applications are fundamentally oriented to vector computers, and whether or not they can be e ciently implemented on hierarchical memory machines, such as systems with cache memories and highly parallel, distributed memory system...

Mapping Unstructured Grid Problems to the Connection Machine

We present a highly parallel graph mapping technique that enables one to efficiently solve unstructured grid problems on massively parallel computers. Many implicit and explicit methods for solving discretized partial differential equations require each point in the discretization to exchange data with its neighboring points every time step or iteration. The time spent communicating can limit t...

Microphone Array Phased Processing System (MAPPS): Phased Array System for Acoustic Measurements in a Wind Tunnel

A processing system has been developed to meet increasing demands for detailed noise measurement of aircraft in wind tunnels. Phased arrays enable spatial and amplitude measurements of acoustic sources, including low signal-to-noise sources not measurable by conventional measurement techniques. The Microphone Array Phased Processing System (MAPPS) provides processing and visualization of acoust...

A High-Performance FFT Algorithm for Vector Supercomputers

Many traditional algorithms for computing the fast Fourier transform (FFT) on conventional computers are unacceptable for advanced vector and parallel computers because they involve nonunit, power-of-two memory strides. This paper presents a practical technique for computing the fast Fourier transform that completely avoids all such strides and appears to be near-optimal for a variety of curren...

Performance Evaluation of Remote Memory Access (RMA) Programming on Shared Memory Parallel Computers

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of remote memory access (RMA) programming on shared memory parallel computers. We discuss different RMA based implementations of selected CFD application benchmark kernels and compare them to corresponding message passing based codes For the message-passing implementation we use MPI point-to-point and global communication routines. For th...
