چکیده

Reduction in ascent speed and an increase in the O2 tension in the inspired air have been used to reduce the risk for decompression sickness. It has previously been reported that decompression speed and O2 partial pressure are linearly related for human decompressions from saturation hyperbaric exposures. The constant of proportionality K (K = rate/partial pressure of inspired O2) indicates the incidence of decompression sickness. The present study investigated the relationship among decompression rate, partial pressure of inspired O2, and the number of central gas bubbles after a 3-h dive to 500 kPa while breathing nitrox with an O2 content of 35 kPa. We used transesophageal ultrasonic scanning to determine the number of bubbles in the pulmonary artery of pigs. The results show that, for a given level of decompression stress, decompression rate and O2 tension in the inspired air can be traded off against each other by using pulmonary artery bubbles as an end point. The results also seem to confirm that decompressions that have a high K value are more stressful.

Tissue nitrogen elimination in oxygen-breathing pigs is enhanced by fluorocarbon-derived intravascular micro-bubbles.

UNLABELLED The present study tested the hypothesis that intravascular micro bubbles generated by i.v. infusion of a 2 % dodecafluoropentane (DDFP) emulsion will enhance tissue denitrogenation during oxygen breathing. Eleven spontaneously breathing pentobarbital anesthetized pigs were studied. Six pigs were treated with 0.08 ml/kg of DDFP-emulsion infused over 30 min and five (control) pigs rece...

Observed bubble dynamics in oxygen or heliox breathing and altitude decompression sickness.

ALTITUDE decompression sickness (DCS) is a common risk in aviation and has been extensively studied over the past two decades (2, 3, 9). Attempts have been made to find a correlation between ultrasonic bubble detection and symptoms of altitude DCS (1, 8). Models extrapolating the risk of DCS from diving to altitude have not always been successful (4). Altitude DCS can occur in flying after divi...

The Extended Oxygen Window Concept for Programming Saturation Decompressions Using Air and Nitrox

Saturation decompression is a physiological process of transition from one steady state, full saturation with inert gas at pressure, to another one: standard conditions at surface. It is defined by the borderline condition for time spent at a particular depth (pressure) and inert gas in the breathing mixture (nitrogen, helium). It is a delicate and long lasting process during which single milli...

Optimal oxygen pressure and time for reduced bubble formation in the N2-saturated decompressed prawn.

Bubbles that grow during decompression are believed to originate from preexisting gas micronuclei. We showed that pretreatment of prawns with 203 kPa oxygen before nitrogen loading reduced the number of bubbles that evolved on decompression, presumably owing to the alteration or elimination of gas micronuclei (Arieli Y, Arieli R, and Marx A. J Appl Physiol 92: 2596-2599, 2002). The present stud...

Recreational scuba diving, patent foramen ovale and their associated risks.

Scuba diving has become a popular leisure time activity with distinct risks to health owing to its physical characteristics. Knowledge of the behaviour of any mixture of breathable gases under increased ambient pressure is crucial for safe diving and gives clues as to the pathophysiology of compression or decompression related disorders. Immersion in cold water augments cardiac pre- and afterlo...
