چکیده
The Authors present a case of subcutaneous mucormycosis occurring in a patient with clinical and biochemical evidence of diabetic ketoacidosis. The clinical, mycological and histopathological features are described, emphasizing the relevance of a rapid diagnosis in order to stablish early treatment. The clinical forms of mucormycosis and the main associated conditions are briefly reviewed as well as the most probable conditions which may lead to the enhanced susceptibility to infection in the diabetic patient in ketoacidosis. The recovery of Rhizo¬ pus oryzae from the air of the room of the patient suggests a nosocomial infection acquired through contamination of venous puncture site by air borne spores.

Rhizopus rhizopodiformis: emerging etiological agent of mucormycosis.
Mucormycosis is caused principally by members of the genus Rhizopus, especially R arrhizus and R. oryzae. Infection attributable to R. rhizopodiformis has rarely been documented. Of 13 cases of mucormycosis diagnosed during a 4-year period (1974 to 1978) at The Mount Sinai Hospital, 6 cases, occurring within 9 months, were caused by R. rhizopodiformis. The six isolates were identified mainly by...

A post-operative diabetic patient who had been treated for Serratia marcescens bacterial sepsis developed recurrent thrombosis of the left femoral artery following intra-arterial instrumentation. Pathological examination of arterial thrombus ultimately demonstrated invasive mucormycosis of the femoral artery and cultures of this material grew Rhizopus oryzae. The occurrence of cutaneous and sub...
متن کاملOtocerebral Mucormycosis: A Rare Case in a Diabetic Patient with Unusual Presentation
Mucormycosis is the common name given to clinical disease caused by fungi of the order Mucoraceae of class zygomycetes. Mucormycosis is a life threatening fungal infection which commonly affects the Immunocompromised hosts almost uniformly in developing as well as industrialised countries. Mucorales are distributed into six families all of which can cause cutaneous and deep fungal infections. O...
متن کاملAn unusual ulcer: A case of cutaneous mucormycosis caused by Rhizopus oryzae
Mucormycoses are high-mortality infections feared by clinicians worldwide. They predominantly affect immunocompromised hosts and are associated with a spectrum of disease. We describe a case of cutaneous mucormycosis caused by Rhizopus oryzae in a patient with multiple risk factors cured with complete surgical excision and a short course of antifungal therapy.
متن کاملAn unusual case of nasal mucormycosis caused by Rhizopus oryzae in a German shepherd dog
This study represents an unusual case of mucormycosis localized in nasal cavity of a German shepherd dog. The patient was a 1-year-old male guard dog with unilateral nasal epistaxis, mucopurulent nasal discharge, sneezing and nose pawing. The dog had a history of head trauma about 2 months before admission, which was associated with mild self-limited epistaxis. Initial nasal rhinoscopy showed s...
