Integrating System Approaches to Culture and Personality The Cultural Cognitive–Affective Processing System

چکیده
As the chapters in this volume attest, the foundational premise that culture and person coconstitute one another, perhaps more than any other, characterizes contemporary cultural psychology (Cole, 1996; Kitayama, 2002; Miller, 1997; 1999; Piker, 1998; Shweder, 1990). Ironically, however, this very premise is most challenging for a cultural psychological view of personality, for “personality” has historically been, and in much cross-cultural research continues to be, conceptualized as the qualities of the individual that are separable from context (Kitayama & Markus, 1999; Pervin, 1999; Poortinga & Hemert, 2001; Shweder, 1991). The challenge for a cultural-psychological approach to personality remains to specify the nature of, and the mechanisms underlying, the co-constitution of person and culture. This chapter brings together insights from various theoretical and empirical lines of research (e.g., Hong & Chiu, 2001; Hong, Morris, Chiu, & Benet-Martinez, 2000; Kashima, 2001, 2004; Markus & Kitayama, 1998; Mendoza-Denton, Shoda, Ayduk, & Mischel, 1999; Cohen, 1997)

Culture, personality, and subjective well-being: integrating process models of life satisfaction.
The authors examined the interplay of personality and cultural factors in the prediction of the affective (hedonic balance) and the cognitive (life satisfaction) components of subjective well-being (SWB). They predicted that the influence of personality on life satisfaction is mediated by hedonic balance and that the relation between hedonic balance and life satisfaction is moderated by culture...

متن کاملIntegrating Fuzzy Inference System, Image Processing and Quality Control to Detect Defects and Classify Quality Level of Copper Rods
Human-based quality control reduces the accuracy of this process. Also, the speed of decision making in some industries is very important. For removing these limitations in human-based quality control, in this paper, the design of an expert system for automatic and intelligent quality control is investigated. In fact, using an intelligent system, the accuracy in quality control is increased. It...
متن کاملDownsides of an overly context-sensitive self: implications from the culture and subjective well-being research.
The self becomes context sensitive in service of the need to belong. When it comes to achieving personal happiness, an identity system that derives its worth and meaning excessively from its social context puts itself in a significantly disadvantageous position. This article integrates empirical findings and ideas from the self, subjective well-being, and cross-cultural literature and tries to ...
متن کاملThe Cultural Part of Cognition
This paper discusses the role of cultural anthropology in Cognitive Science. Culture is described as a very large pool of information passed along from generation to generation, composed of learned "programs" for action and understanding. These cultural programs differ in important ways from computer programs. Cultural programs tend to be unspecified and inexplicit rather than clearly stated al...
