چکیده

The submillimeter antennas of the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) have specifications that are beyond the current state of the art in accurate reflector antenna technology. Considering that as many as 64 of these antennas would eventually be needed, the ALMA partners AUI/NRAO and ESO each agreed to acquire a prototype antenna, and subject these to an extensive evaluation program. In this paper we summarize the performance of the ALMA North American prototype antenna. 1. Design Characteristics The ALMA antennas are alt-azimuth mounted Cassegrain dual-reflector systems of 12m diameter with a reflector surface and pointing accuracy suitable for observations in the 0.3 mm submillimeter band. On 2003/10/01 VertexRSI delivered the North American prototype antenna to AUI/NRAO. The VertexRSI prototype antenna (Figure 1) includes a number of innovative design features to ensure its performance to the ALMA specifications: 1

Evaluation of the ALMA Prototype Antennas

The ALMA North American and European prototype antennas have been evaluated by a variety of measurement systems to quantify the major performance specifications. Nearfield holography was used to set the reflector surfaces to 17 μm RMS. Pointing and fast switching performance was determined with an optical telescope and by millimeter wavelength radiometry, yielding 2 absolute and 0.6 offset poin...

A Capacitive Fed Microstrip Patch Antenna with Air Gap for Wideband Applications (RESEARCH NOTE)

In this paper a microstrip antenna on a suspended substrate with capacitive feed is presented. capacitive feed is created by a slot within the rectangular patch around the feed point. The proposed antenna exhibits a much higher impedance bandwidth of about 47% (S11 < −10 dB). Effects of key design parameters such as the air gap between the substrate and the ground plane, the gap width between r...

Parametric Study of UC-PBG Structure in Terms of Simultaneous AMC and EBG Properties and its Applications in Proximity-coupled Fractal Patch Antenna

In this paper, a parametric study of conventional Uniplanar Compact Photonic Band Gap (UC-PBG) structures, with different dimensions, is investigated. The studied structure operates as an Artificial Magnetic Conductor (AMC) in which the performance is mainly characterized by the resonant frequency and bandwidth. Simulation and numerical analysis have been carried out using CST Microwave Studio ...

A Miniaturized CPW-Fed Tapered Slot Antenna in Lossy Environment for UWB Application in Breast Cancer Detection

In this paper, a miniaturized coplanar waveguide fed (CPW-fed) tapered slot antenna (TSA) is introduced for breast cancer detection. Here, a modified CPW to slot-line transition structure with an air-bridge is employed to broaden the transition bandwidth and increase the radiation efficiency. Through these applied modifications, negative features of the original TSA (limitation of transition) a...

Ultra Wideband Monopole Antenna Excited by a Capacitive Coupling Feed with Double Band Notch Function

This paper presents the results of a new monopole antenna that exhibits 2.75-10.7 GHz performance. The proposed antenna consists of a radiating patch with notches excited by capacitive coupling feed. Also, the antenna’s truncated ground-plane incorporates a central notch. This modification significantly improves the antenna’s impedance bandwidth by 118% over an ultra-wideband frequency range. T...
