A cross-nested logit choice model of joint travel mode and departure time choice for urban commuting trips: case study in Maryland-Washington, DC Region

چکیده
The aim of this paper is to contribute to describe the simultaneous choice of travel mode and 1 departure time by making use of a cross-nested logit structure that allows for the joint representation of 2 inter-alternative correlation along the both choice dimensions. Traditional multinomial logit model and 3 nested logit model are formulated respectively. The analysis uses the Revealed Preference (RP) data 4 collected from Maryland-Washington, DC Regional Household Travel Survey in 2007-2008 for 5 commuting trips, considering more work-related characteristics than previous studies. A comparison of 6 the different model results shows that the presented cross-nested logit structure offers significant 7 improvements over multinomial logit and nested logit models. The empirical results of the analysis 8 reveal significant influences on commuter joint choice behavior of travel mode and departure time. 9 Moreover, a Monte Carlo simulation for two groups of scenarios arising from transportation policies, 10 congestion-pricing and improvements to transit service during peak period, is undertaken respectively 11 to examine the impact of a change in car travel cost and transit travel time on the travel mode and 12 departure time switching. The simulation results show that five dollars increase in car travel cost during 13 peak period has a similar effect on reducing drive alone in peak hours as 30% saving in transit travel 14 time, but only half of the latter policy in the transit ridership increase. 15

A Direct Demand Model of Departure Time and Mode for Intercity Passenger Trips
Travel demand is well announced as a crucial component of transportation planning. This paper aims to develop a direct demand model, denoting a more acceptable abstraction of reality, for intercity passengers in daily work and leisure trips in Tehran province. The model utilizes combined estimation across the data source, collected in 2011, of travelers originating from ...
متن کاملModelling Departure Time, Destination and Travel Mode Choices by Using Generalized Nested Logit Model: Discretionary Trips (Research Note)
Despite traditional four-step model is the most prominent model in majority of travel demand analysis, it does not represent the potential correlations within different travel dimensions. As a result, some researches have suggested the use of choice modelling instead. However, most of them have represented travel dimensions individually rather than jointly. This research aims to fill this gap t...
متن کاملApplication of Discrete 3-level Nested Logit Model in Travel Demand Forecasting as an Alternative to Traditional 4-Step Model
This paper aims to introduce a new modelling approach that represents departure time, destination and travel mode choice under a unified framework. Through it, it is possible to overcome shortages of the traditional 4-step model associated with the lack of introducing actual travellers’ behaviours. This objective can be achieved through adopting discrete 3-level Nested Logit model that represen...
متن کاملAccommodating Flexible Substitution Patterns in Multi-Dimensional Choice Modeling: Formulation and Application to Travel Mode and Departure Time Choice
The nested logit model has been used extensively to model multi-dimensional choice situations. A drawback of the nested logit model is that it does not allow choice alternatives to share common unobserved attributes along all the dimensions characterizing the multi-dimensional choice context. This paper formulates a mixed multinomial logit structure that accommodates unobserved correlation acro...
متن کاملEffect of family structure on urban areas modal split by using the life cycle concept
The modal split model is one of the steps of the classical four-step travel demand planning. Predictive, descriptive, and prescriptive modal split models are essential to make a balance between travel demand and supply. To calibrate these models, it is necessary to detect and employ influential independent variables that are related to characteristics of travel modes, individual and family attr...
