چکیده

Burst "ring is a prominent feature of cortical pyramidal cells and is thought to have signi"cant functional roles in reliable signaling and synaptic plasticity. Modeling studies have successfully elucidated possible biophysical mechanisms underlying complex bursting in pyramidal cells. Based on these results (Pinsky, Rinzel, J. Comput. Neurosci. 1 (1994) 39}60), we have built a simpli"ed two-compartment burst model. Using the fastand slow-variable analysis method, we show that complex bursting is an instance of square-wave bursting, where the dendritic slow potassium conductance is the single slow variable. The coupling parameters between the two compartments change the topological class of bursting thereby altering the "ring patterns of the neuron. These results explain the diverse set of "ring patterns seen with di!erent dendritic morphologies (Mainen, Sejnowski, Nature 382 (1996) 363}366). ( 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Gamma Rhythmic Bursts: Coherence Control in Networks of Cortical Pyramidal Neurons

Much evidence indicates that synchronized gamma-frequency (20-70 Hz) oscillation plays a significant functional role in the neocortex and hippocampus. Chattering neuron is a possible neocortical pacemaker for the gamma oscillation. Based on our recent model of chattering neurons, here we study how gamma-frequency bursting is synchronized in a network of these neurons. Using a phase oscillator d...

The Role of Excitatory and Inhibitory Synaptic Connectivity in the Pattern of Bursting Behavior in a Pyramidal Neuron Model

The connections between excitatory and inhibitory synapses are significant for generation of busting activity in a pyramidal neuron model. We have suggested in previous studies that a reduced neuronal model of synaptically connected neurons could produce repetitive bursting activity. We have also suggested that the modification of the balance between inhibition and excitation by synaptic weight...

Contribution of persistent Na+ current and M-type K+ current to somatic bursting in CA1 pyramidal cells: combined experimental and modeling study.

The intrinsic firing modes of adult CA1 pyramidal cells vary along a continuum of "burstiness" from regular firing to rhythmic bursting, depending on the ionic composition of the extracellular milieu. Burstiness is low in neurons exposed to a normal extracellular Ca(2+) concentration ([Ca(2+)](o)), but is markedly enhanced by lowering [Ca(2+)](o), although not by blocking Ca(2+) and Ca(2+)-acti...

Methods for Simulating High-Conductance States in Neural Microcircuits

A network simulation paradigm was developed to be consistent with observations of the highconductance state of layer IV cortical neurons in an awake brain in-vivo. Two classes of integrate-and-fire based neurons, pyramidal (with adaptation) and inhibitory, were modeled. Synapses were conductance based. The highconductance state was induced by synaptic bombardment with 1000 excitatory and 250 in...

Cortical pyramidal cells as non-linear oscillators: experiment and spike-generation theory.

Cortical neurons are capable of generating trains of action potentials in response to current injections. These discharges can take different forms, e.g., repetitive firing that adapts during the period of current injection or bursting behaviors. We have used a combined experimental and computational approach to characterize the dynamics leading to action potential responses in single neurons. ...
