Smooth-muscle tumours of the alimentary tract.

چکیده
Smooth muscle tumors (SMT) of the alimentary tract are uncommon. A series of 32 cases (16 leiomyomas and 16 leiomyosarcomas) are presented. The most common presenting clinical signs are bleeding or obstruction. These are caused mainly by degenerative changes within the lesion or its enlargement. The endoluminal SMT cause symptoms early and are more easily detectable. However, the extraluminal SMT, producing an extrinsic mass, can remain asymptomatic for a long time. Thus, such SMT may be found incidentally during operation. The larger SMT are mostly malignant. Microscopically it is sometimes difficult to determine if the SMT is benign or malignant.

A Histological study on the development of the digestive tract of Caspian salmon, Salmo trutta caspius (Kessleri), from hatching to parr stage
Histological development of digestive tract of the Caspian salmon, Salmo trutta caspius, from hatching to 6 month post-hatching was studied using light microscope. The digestive tract of newly hatched larvae was a simple, undifferentiated tube which continued from mouth to anus. In 10 days post hatching larvae, the alimentary canal became more differentiated and secretion was started activity, ...

متن کاملThe radiology of gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST)
Gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs) comprise a group of smooth muscle mesenchymal alimentary tract tumours of variable malignancy. Recently, the pathophysiology and radiology of these tumours has generated enormous interest following the discovery of a specific, highly effective, chemotherapeutic agent in the form of ST-571 (Imatinib; Glivec, Novartis, Frimley UK). At the time of this revi...
متن کاملAlimentary Tract Motility
Alimentary/Tract/Motility/ 1 SMOOTH MUSCLE Smooth muscle lines the walls of hollow organs (eg. intestine, uterus), the circulatory system (arteries and veins), and ducts of secretory glands. The primary role of smooth muscle is to regulate the diameter of the organ lumen which it surrounds. Although "smooth muscle" is used to categorize muscle components of these various tissues, there is a lar...
متن کاملDeranged smooth muscle a-actin as a biomarker of intestinal pseudo-obstruction: a controlled multinational case series
Background and aims: Chronic idiopathic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIIP) is a severe motility disorder associated with significant morbidity. Several histopathological (neuropathic and myopathic) phenotypes have been described but only a single adult with jejunal smooth (circular) muscle a-actin deficiency. We present a prospective multinational case series investigating smooth muscle a-act...
