چکیده

The use of modified black wattle tannin as antifouling pigment is reported in this work. Mixture of tannin adsorbed in activated carbon (soluble fraction of tannin) and low soluble fraction of tannin was used as antifouling pigment. The soluble rosin resin was used as paint matrix. 13 C NMR analysis confirm the modification of black wattle tannin through the cleavage of tannin interflavonoid bonds. FTIR spectra indicates the presence of tannin in the formulated antifouling coating even after 7 months of its exposure in marine environment. Water contact angle analysis shows the hydrophilic characteristic of tannin antifouling coating surface. Immersion tests at Badalona port in Mediterranean Sea shows the high antifouling efficiency of TAN coating, comparable to the commercial paint, until 7 months. The use of a natural black wattle tannin, without its complexation with metals, can eliminate the release of metals and other toxic biocides to the marine environment.

Increasing the oxidative stress response allows Escherichia coli to overcome inhibitory effects of condensed tannins.

Tannins are plant-derived polyphenols with antimicrobial effects. The mechanism of tannin toxicity towards Escherichia coli was determined by using an extract from Acacia mearnsii (Black wattle) as a source of condensed tannins (proanthocyanidins). E. coli growth was inhibited by tannins only when tannins were exposed to oxygen. Tannins auto-oxidize, and substantial hydrogen peroxide was genera...

Research Note Sheep Ingestion of Water Containing Quebracho or Black Wattle Tannin

Ingestion of small amounts of condensed tannin (CT) by ruminants can produce valuable outcomes such as improved nitrogen use and reduced bloating, methane output, and gastrointestinal parasitism. However, many grasses and forbs contain little if any CT. The specific types of CT vary in plants and can have somewhat different effects on ruminants. Individual ruminants can respond differently to C...

The BaeSR two-component regulatory system mediates resistance to condensed tannins in Escherichia coli.

The gene expression profiles of Escherichia coli strains grown anaerobically with or without Acacia mearnsii (black wattle) extract were compared to identify tannin resistance strategies. The cell envelope stress protein gene spy and the multidrug transporter-encoding operon mdtABCD, both under the control of the BaeSR two-component regulatory system, were significantly up-regulated in the pres...

Characterization of high-tannin fractions from humus by carbon-13 cross-polarization and magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance.

Condensed tannins can be found in various parts of many plants. Unlike lignin there has been little study of their fate as they enter the soil organic matter pool and their influence on nutrient cycling, especially through their protein-binding properties. We extracted and characterized tannin-rich fractions from humus collected in 1998 from a black spruce [Picea mariana (Mill.) Britton et al.]...

Cattle and sheep develop preference for drinking water containing grape seed tannin.

Ingestion of small amounts of some types of condensed tannins (CTs) by ruminant livestock can provide nutritional, environmental and economic benefits. However, practical methods are needed to make these tannins more available to ruminant livestock. Results from previous trials with crude quebracho and black wattle tannin indicated that cattle and/or sheep would not preferentially drink water c...
