چکیده

During solar maximum conditions, the heliosphere is highly structured on all spatial scales. It is the purpose of this paper to summarize our current understanding of these structures from global scales to mesoscale, a fraction of 1 AU. We use theoretical considerations, in situ observations near Earth and the Ulysses spacecraft, and global heliosphere calculations to discuss the effects on both global and mesoscales on the three-dimensional structure of the heliospheric magnetic field and their effects on galactic cosmic rays. These conclusions are in contrast to nearsolar-minimum-like heliospheric conditions that are currently assumed in modulation and transport calculations even during solar maximum. The expected complex heliospheric properties should be of major importance for the interpretation of the heliospheric boundary events observed by Voyager 1 since 2002. A companion paper by L. A. Fisk will explore the effects of the mesoscale structures on particle acceleration in the heliospheric boundary region.

Heliospheric modulation of galactic cosmic rays during grand solar minima: Past and future variations

[1] Galactic cosmic ray flux at Earth is modulated by the heliospheric magnetic field. Heliospheric modulation potential, F, during grand solar minima is investigated using an open solar flux (OSF) model with OSF source based on sunspot number, R, and OSF loss on heliospheric current sheet inclination. Changing dominance between source and loss means F varies in(anti-) phase with R during stron...

An empirical model of heliospheric cosmic ray modulation on long-term time scale

Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs) entering the heliosphere are subject to modulation processes due to variable solar magnetic activity. Finding a relationship between cosmic-ray variations and the heliospheric parameters is important for reconstruction of solar activity in the past. Here, we develop a semi-empirical model describing the heliospheric modulation of GCRs in terms of heliospheric paramet...

Ground Based Measurements of Galactic and Solar Cosmic Rays

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The global network of ground based neutron monitors and muon telescopes constitutes a unique “instrument” in an armada of particle detection and measurement facilities now in space and to be deployed in the future. This network has a particle energy detection threshold of order 500 MeV, extending up to 50 GeV, with a full-sky field of view continuously making dozens of pointed...

The 22-Year Hale Cycle in Cosmic Ray Flux - Evidence for Direct Heliospheric Modulation

The ability to predict times of greater galactic cosmic ray (GCR) fluxes is important for reducing the hazards caused by these particles to satellite communications, aviation, or astronauts. The 11-year solar cycle variation in cosmic rays is highly correlated with the strength of the heliospheric magnetic field. Differences in GCR flux during alternate solar cycles yield a 22-year cycle, known...

Inverse Compton Scattering on Solar Photons, Heliospheric Modulation, and Neutrino Astrophysics

We study the inverse Compton scattering of solar photons by Galactic cosmic-ray electrons. We show that the γ-ray emission from this process is substantial with the maximum flux in the direction of the Sun; the angular distribution of the emission is broad. This previously-neglected foreground should be taken into account in studies of the diffuse Galactic and extragalactic γ-ray emission. Furt...
