Experimental Psychology, in press Position coding in two-digit Arabic numbers: Evidence from number decision and same-different tasks

چکیده
Digit position coding in two-digit Arabic numbers was examined in two masked priming experiments. In Experiment 1, participants had to decide whether the presented stimulus was a two-digit Arabic number (e.g., 67) or not (e.g., G7). Target stimuli could be preceded by a prime which i) shared one digit in the initial position (e.g., 13-18), ii) shared one digit but in a different position (83-18), iii) was a transposed number (8118). Two unrelated control conditions, equalized in terms of the distance between primes and targets with the experimental conditions were also included (e.g., 79-18). Results showed a priming effect only when prime and target shared digits in the same position. Experiment 2 employed a masked priming same-different matching task –a task that has been successfully employed in the literature on letter position coding. Results showed faster response times when prime and target shared digits –including the transposed-digit condition– relative to the control conditions. Thus, the identity of each digit in the early stages of visual processing is not associated with a specific position in 2-digit Arabic numbers. We examine the implication of these findings for models of Arabic number processing.

متن کاملSubliminal Priming in Subtracting One-Digit Arabic Numbers
Background: Based on the studies which have investigated conscious and unconscious processes, simple arithmetic operations such as addition and multiplication can be automatically processed in the brain and affect subsequent responses. However, most studies have focused on addition and multiplication of one-digit numbers. In this research we used subliminal priming paradigm to assess automatic ...
متن کاملVerbal structure of numerals and digits handwriting: new evidence from kinematics.
Two experiments used a digitizing tablet to analyse the temporal, spatial, and kinematic characteristics of handwritten production of arabic numbers. They addressed a specific issue of the numerical domain: Does the lexical and syntactic structure of verbal numerals influence the production of arabic numerals (Experiments 1 and 2), even after enforced semantic processing in a comparison task (E...
متن کاملThe Integration of internal and External Information in Numerical Tasks
Numerical tasks with Arabic numerals involve the integration of internal and external information and the interaction between perception and cognition. 2-digit number comparison task was selected to study these integration and interaction processes. To compare the magnitudes of two 2digit Arabic numerals, we can (1) compare them digitbydigit sequentially, (2) compare corresponding digits in par...
متن کاملCoding strategies in number space: memory requirements influence spatial-numerical associations.
The tendency to respond faster with the left hand to relatively small numbers and faster with the right hand to relatively large numbers (spatial numerical association of response codes, SNARC effect) has been interpreted as an automatic association of spatial and numerical information. We investigated in two experiments the impact of task-irrelevant memory representations on this effect. Parti...
