چکیده
Weight increases significantly with increased beak size, even after accounting for the correlated variation in overall size (as measured by the two skeletal variables). The beak measurements are very highly correlated with each other, so (1) it is impossible to disentangle their relationships with weight, and (2) they are redundant so that if one is in the model neither of the others explains much additional variation. For these data these conclusions could be reached either by dividing weight by one or both skeletal variables and regressing the resulting ratio on the beak measurements, or by including the skeletal variables as additional explanatory variables in a multiple regression analysis.

Vocal mechanics in Darwin's finches: correlation of beak gape and song frequency.
Recent studies of vocal mechanics in songbirds have identified a functional role for the beak in sound production. The vocal tract (trachea and beak) filters harmonic overtones from sounds produced by the syrinx, and birds can fine-tune vocal tract resonance properties through changes in beak gape. In this study, we examine patterns of beak gape during song production in seven species of Darwin...

Data collected in 2012 on 400 chickens were subjected to two-way analyses of variance to estimatebody weight, morphometric traits as well as the correlationbetween body weight and morphometric traitsin Isa Brown and Ilorin ecotypechickens. The studied morphometric traits were comb length, beak length, head length, neck length, body length, wing length, shank length, thigh length, toe length, bre...
متن کاملPopulation genomics fits the bill: genetics of adaptive beak variation in Darwin's finches.
Darwin's finches are an iconic case of adaptive radiation. The size and shape of their beaks are key adaptive traits related to trophic niche that vary among species and evolve rapidly when the food supply changes. Building on recent studies, a paper in this issue of Molecular Ecology (Chaves et al. ) investigates the genomic basis of beak size variation in sympatric populations of three specie...
متن کاملGenomic variation at the tips of the adaptive radiation of Darwin's finches.
Adaptive radiation unfolds as selection acts on the genetic variation underlying functional traits. The nature of this variation can be revealed by studying the tips of an ongoing adaptive radiation. We studied genomic variation at the tips of the Darwin's finch radiation; specifically focusing on polymorphism within, and variation among, three sympatric species of the genus Geospiza. Using res...
متن کاملRelationship between body weight and beak characteristics in one-day-old white Leghorn chicks: its implications for beak trimming.
Beak trimming is a routine practice used in laying hens to prevent feather pecking and cannibalism. The effect of beak trimming on bird well-being depends on multiple factors, including the amount of beak that is trimmed and the quality of the procedure. The aim of this work was to determine if a relationship existed between BW and beak characteristics in 1-d-old chicks, with a future aim to de...
