چکیده

The structure and electronic properties of polymer-derived silicoboron–carbonitride ceramics are reported. Structural analysis using radial-distribution-function formalism showed that the local structure is comprised of Si tetrahedra with B, C, and N at the corners. Boron doping of SiCN leads to enhanced p-type conductivity ~0.1 V cm at room temperature!. The conductivity variation with temperature for both SiCN and SiBCN ceramics shows Mott’s variable range hopping behavior in these materials, characteristic of a highly defective semiconductor. The SiBCN ceramic has a low, positive value of thermopower, which is probably due to a compensation mechanism. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1370540#

Formation of nanocrystalline titanium carbonitride by pyrolysis of poly(titanylcarbodiimide)

The chemical formation of advanced ceramics from organometallic precursors is promising with respect to structural design and tailormade properties. We report on the synthesis of nanocrystalline titanium carbonitride materials at different pyrolysis temperatures via the polymer-to-ceramic transformation of synthesised poly(titanylcarbodiimides) and their structural and nanochemical characteriza...

Silicon Nitride Based Coatings Grown by Reactive Magnetron Sputtering

Silicon nitride and silicon nitride-based ceramics have several favorable material properties, such as high hardness and good wear resistance, which makes them important materials for the coating industry. This thesis focuses the synthesis of silicon nitride, silicon oxynitride, and silicon carbonitride thin films by reactive magnetron sputtering. The films were characterized based on their che...

Ab Initio Computations of Electronic, Mechanical, and Thermal Properties of ZrB2 and HfB2

A comprehensive ab initio analysis of the ultra high temperature ceramics ZrB2 and HfB2 is presented. Density functional theory (DFT) computations were performed for the electronic, mechanical, thermal, and point defect properties of these materials. Lattice constants and elastic constants were determined. Computations of the electronic density of states, band structure, electron localization f...

Shape memory and superelastic ceramics at small scales.

Shape memory materials are a class of smart materials able to convert heat into mechanical strain (or strain into heat) by virtue of a martensitic phase transformation. Some brittle materials such as intermetallics and ceramics exhibit a martensitic transformation but fail by cracking at low strains and after only a few applied strain cycles. Here we show that such failure can be suppressed in ...
