چکیده

This paper reports the inhibition efficiency of a family of polyaminoamide (PAMAM) STARBURST® dendrimers in colloidal SiO2 growth. PAMAMs of various generations (0.5, 1.5, 2.5 with –COOH termini, and 1, and 2 with –NH2 termini) were tested and compared to control samples. Superiority of the dendrimer inhibitors with –NH2 termini (maintaining∼380 ppm soluble SiO2 after 12 h) versus those with –COOH termini (maintaining ∼180 ppm soluble SiO2 after 12 h) was discovered in solutions containing 500 ppm initial SiO2. These inhibitors present potential for water treatment applications. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Use of antiscalants for mitigation of silica (SiO2) fouling and deposition: fundamentals and applications in desalination systems

Colloidal silica (SiO2) is perhaps the most undesirable inorganic deposit formed in process industrial waters, either in bulk or on surfaces, such as membrane heat exchangers or pipelines. Conventional mineral scale inhibitors do not inhibit its formation. Chemical cleaning is difficult and not free from hazards. Research on silica scale formation and prevention is on-going and has led to vario...

Cationic polymeric chemical inhibitors and multifunctional blends for the control of silica scale in process waters

Water is used globally for cooling purposes in industry. During its re-use, scaling and deposition can develop due to the high content of dissolved species. Among the toughest to combat is silica scale, or amorphous silicon dioxide. In this paper, we present how certain chemical interventions in the water chemistry can be beneficial for inhibiting silica polycondensation. Specifically, we have ...

Condensation transition in DNA-polyaminoamide dendrimer fibers studied using optical tweezers.

When mixed together, DNA and polyaminoamide dendrimers form fibers that condense into a compact structure. We use optical tweezers to pull condensed fibers and investigate the decondensation transition by measuring force-extension curves (FECs). A characteristic force plateau (around 10 pN) and hysteresis between the pulling and relaxation cycles are observed for different dendrimer sizes, indi...

Regulation of in vitro gene expression using antisense oligonucleotides or antisense expression plasmids transfected using starburst PAMAM dendrimers.

Starburst polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers are a new type of synthetic polymer characterized by a branched spherical shape and a high density surface charge. We have investigated the ability of these dendrimers to function as an effective delivery system for antisense oligonucleotides and 'antisense expression plasmids' for the targeted modulation of gene expression. Dendrimers bind to various...

Dendrimer templated synthesis of one nanometer Rh and Pt particles supported on mesoporous silica: catalytic activity for ethylene and pyrrole hydrogenation.

Monodisperse rhodium (Rh) and platinum (Pt) nanoparticles as small as approximately 1 nm were synthesized within a fourth generation polyaminoamide (PAMAM) dendrimer, a hyperbranched polymer, in aqueous solution and immobilized by depositing onto a high-surface-area SBA-15 mesoporous support. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated that the as-synthesized Rh and Pt nanoparticles were mostly ...
