Tropical Rainforest Ecology from a Canopy Perspective
نویسنده
چکیده
Many processes that are fundamental to tropical rainforest maintenance and regeneration take place in the forest canopy. Recently developed access techniques afford biologists nondestructive means to document and quantify canopy biota and their accompanying activities and interactions. Results from studies involving within-canopy observations and measurements of nutrient cycling, epiphyte distribution, species diversity, nutrient cycling, and animal activities in primary and secondary forest are reviewed to identify specific areas of investigation and scientific questions that can be addressed from a canopy perspective. The ongoing progress of current canopy ecology projects in tropical rainforests is described. New data on interactions between neotropical canopy birds and plants and the effects of forest conversion to pasture on these organisms in a neotropical cloud forest suggest that trees left standing in pastures can serve as "island refuges" for a wide variety of bird species using canopy resources such as epiphyte flowers and fruits and accumulated dead organic matter on branches and trunks. This study points out the need for more basic ecological research on canopy ecology in both primary and converted forests.

Understorey bird responses to the edge-interior gradient in an isolated tropical rainforest of Malaysia
Forest fragmentation results in a loss of forest interior and an increase in edge habitat. We studied how understorey bird community composition and habitat variables changed along an edge-to-interior gradient in a 1248-ha lowland rainforest patch in peninsular Malaysia. Birds and environmental variables such as vegetation structure and litter depth were detected within a 25-m radius of each of...
متن کاملThe ecology of tropical rain forest canopies.
With the advent of increasingly sophisticated techniques for access, tropical forest canopy research has burgeoned in the last few years. Although an enormous amount of basic descriptive work remains to be done, canopy research is now entering a more advanced and ecological phase.
متن کاملPervasive canopy dynamics produce short-term stability in a tropical rain forest landscape.
A fundamental property of all forest landscapes is the size frequency distribution of canopy gap disturbances. But characterizing forest structure and changes at large spatial scales has been challenging and most of our understanding is from permanent inventory plots. Here we report the first application of light detection and ranging remote sensing to measurements of canopy disturbance and reg...
متن کاملTree-climbing Crabs (potamonautidae and Sesarmidae) from Phytotelmic Microhabitats in Rainforest Canopy in Madagascar
The ecology of two species of tree-climbing crabs, Malagasya antongilensis (Rathbun, 1905) (Potamonautidae) and Labuanium gracilipes (H. Milne Edwards, 1853) (Sesarmidae), collected from container microhabitats (phytotelmata) in rainforest in the Masoala Peninsula, Madagascar, is described. This is a rare report of a tree-climbing phytotelmic sesarmid crab living in the rainforest canopy, and t...
متن کاملBeetle assemblages from an Australian tropical rainforest show that the canopy and the ground strata contribute equally to biodiversity.
There remains great uncertainty about how much tropical forest canopies contribute to global species richness estimates and the relative specialization of insect species to vertical zones. To investigate these issues, we conducted a four-year sampling program in lowland tropical rainforest in North Queensland, Australia. Beetles were sampled using a trap that combines Malaise and flight interce...
