چکیده

This paper is concerned with glottal opening in the Korean lenis (/p t k/), aspirated (/p t k/) and fortis (/p’ t’ k’/) plosives, using a new non-invasive technique called external lighting and sensing photoglottograph (ePGG) as well as airflow and acoustic data. From the simultaneous recording of ePGG, airflow and acoustic data, we have investigated (a) the timing relations among glottal opening onset and peak, glottal closing onset, airflow onset and peak, and aspiration onset in relation to acoustic events such as a consonant release onset and a vowel onset; (b) how much the peak of glottal opening area, glottal closing speed and airflow peak height occur; and (c) what acoustic conditions arise in accordance with the three-way phonation contrast.

Calibration of External Lighting and Sensing Photoglottograph

Observation and measurement of vocal folds vibration and glottal opening during speech requires techniques as little invasive as possible for the subject. The LPP has developed the External Photoglottograph (ePGG) system. It consists of illuminating the glottis through the neck skin with an infrared light and recording light variation intensity modulated by glottal movement with a photodiode pl...

Do French-speaking Learners Simply Omit the English /h/?

It is commonly considered that French-speaking learners of English tend to drop /h/. In such cases, a hard vowel onset is often observed, suggesting the presence of a glottal stop preceding the vowel, whereas [h] is characterised by an open glottis. First, a set of recordings of the nursery rhyme “Humpty Dumpty” pronounced by 37 French students was acoustically analysed. The H2/H1 ratio (relati...

Acoustics of Human Voice Production

Human voice production is studied as an acoustic process inside the vocal tract using the wave equation for air, and compared with large-scale databases of simultaneously acquired microphone and electroglottograph signals. The following theories are confirmed: For voiced sounds, the process starts at glottal closures. Immediately before a glottal closure, there is a continuous airflow in the vo...

Glottal Opening and Strategies of Production of Fricatives

This work investigates the influence of the gradual opening of the glottis along its length during the production of fricatives in intervocalic contexts. Acoustic simulations reveal the existence of a transient zone in the articulatory space where the frication noise level is very sensitive to small perturbations of the glottal opening. This corresponds to the configurations where both fricatio...

Steady Flow Through Modeled Glottal Constriction

The airflow in the modeled glottal constriction was simulated by the solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations for laminar flow, and the corresponding Reynolds equations for turbulent flow in generalized, nonorthogonal coordinates using a numerical method. A two-dimensional model of laryngeal flow is considered and aerodynamic properties are calculated for both laminar and turbulent steady flows...
