Hybrid simulations of whistler waves generation and current closure by a pulsed tether in the ionosphere

چکیده
The dynamic response of a magnetized collisionless plasma to an externally driven, finite size, sudden switch-on current source across the magnetic field has been studied using a two dimensional hybrid code. It was found that the predominant plasma response was the excitation of whistler waves and the formation of current closure by induced currents in the plasma. The results show that the current closure path consists of: a) two antiparallel field-aligned current channels at the end of the imposed current sheet; and b) a cross-field current region connecting these channels. The formation of the current closure path occured in the whistler timescale much shorter than that of MHD and the closure region expanded continuously in time. The current closure process was accompanied by significant energy loss due to whisfier radiation.

Generation of ELF waves during HF heating of the ionosphere at midlatitudes
Modulated high frequency radio frequency heating of the ionospheric F-region produces a local modulation of the electron temperature, and the resulting pressure gradient gives rise to a diamagnetic current. The oscillations of the diamagnetic current excite hydromagnetic waves in the ELF range that propagate away from the heated region. The generation of the waves in the 2 – 10 Hz range by a mo...
متن کاملNumerical study of mode conversion between lower hybrid and whistler waves on short-scale density striations
[1] We present a theoretical and numerical study of linear mode conversion of lower hybrid waves interacting with short-scale density striations in the Earth’s ionosphere. The efficiency of the conversion process is investigated for different sets of parameters such as the angle of incidence, the wavelength of the lower hybrid wave, and the size of the striation. It is found that the most effic...
متن کاملWhistler-mode Propagation in the Collisional Ionosphere of Venus
Waves identified as whistler-mode waves have been observed in the nightside ionosphere of Venus by the Pioneer Venus Orbiter. These waves are propagating in a collisional, weakly magnetized ionosphere, and it has been argued that as such they should be damped through collisions, and the wave should not retain the characteristics of the whistler-mode because of non-linear modifications to the di...

In present study, dynamic modeling and control of a tethered space robot system in trajectory tracking of its end effector is investigated. Considering variation of the tether length in the model, dynamics of the system is modeled using Lagrange’s method. Librational motion of the tether is controlled by adjusting the tether length similar to conventional manipulators, control of the robot...
متن کاملThe preventive role of Snell’s law in mode conversion from Z- to whistler-mode waves in an inhomogeneous magnetoplasma with a low density
Electromagnetic waves with different modes, such as Z-, whistler-, LO- and RX- modes are found in different regions of the Earth magnetosphere and the magnetosphere of other planets. Since whistler-mode waves influence the behavior of the magnetosphere, and they are used as experimental tools to investigate the upper atmosphere, they are important. On the other hand, the mode conversion process...
