Optical vortex coronagraphs on ground-based telescopes

چکیده

The optical vortex coronagraph is potentially a remarkably effective device, at least for an ideal unobstructed telescope. Most groundbased telescopes however suffer from central obscuration and also have to operate through the aberrations of the turbulent atmosphere. This note analyzes the performance of the optical vortex in these circumstances and compares to some other designs, showing that it performs similarly in this situation. There is a large class of coronagraphs of this general type, and choosing between them in particular applications depends on details of performance at small off-axis distances and uniformity of response in the focal plane. Issues of manufacturability to the necessary tolerances are also likely to be important.

Improved high-contrast imaging with on-axis telescopes using a multistage vortex coronagraph.

The vortex coronagraph is one of the most promising coronagraphs for high-contrast imaging because of its simplicity, small inner working angle, high throughput, and clear off-axis discovery space. However, as with most coronagraphs, centrally obscured on-axis telescopes degrade contrast. Based on the remarkable ability of vortex coronagraphs to move light between the interior and exterior of p...

Appendix 4.7.6.a Dynamic Range Limits on Large Segmented Mirror Telescopes

Segmented primary mirrors have become a mainstream concept for large telescopes of the future. Combining adaptive optics (AO) with segmented ground-based telescopes will enable higher resolution optical and near-infrared imaging than has hitherto been possible. The dynamic range limits of such telescopes then becomes an interesting topic. We develop simple analytic models which complement exist...

Spiders in Lyot Coronagraphs

In principle, suppression of on-axis stellar light by a coronagraph is easier on an unobscured aperture telescope than on one with an obscured aperture. Recent designs such as the apodized pupil Lyot coronagraph, the ‘band-limited’ Lyot coronagraph, and several variants of phase mask coronagraphs work best on unobscured circular aperture telescopes. These designs are developed to enable the dis...

Apodized phase mask coronagraphs for arbitrary apertures. II. Comprehensive review of solutions for the vortex coronagraph

With a clear circular aperture, the vortex coronagraph perfectly cancels an on-axis point source and offers a 0.9 or 1.75 λ/D inner working angle for topological charge 2 or 4, respectively. Current and near-future large telescopes are on-axis, however, and the diffraction effects of the central obscuration, and the secondary supports are strong enough to prevent the detection of companions 10−...
