چکیده

Hard spherocylinders (cylinders of length L and diameter D capped at both ends with two hemispheres) provide a suitable model for investigating entropy-driven, mesophase formations in real colloidal fluids that are composed of rigid rodlike molecules. We performed extensive Monte Carlo simulations of this model fluid for elongations in the range 3 ≤ L/D ≤ 5 and up to L/D = 20, in order to investigate the relative importance of translational and orientational correlations allowing for the emergence of nematic or smectic order in the framework of the so-called residual multi-particle entropy (RMPE). The vanishing of this quantity, which includes the re-summed contributions of all spatial correlations involving more than two particles, signals the structural changes which take place, at increasing densities, in the isotropic fluid. We found that the ordering thresholds detected through the zero-RMPE condition systematically correlate ∗Corresponding author; E-mail: [email protected]

Phase behaviour of polarizable colloidal hard rods in an external electric field: a simulation study.

We present a double-charge model for the interaction between parallel polarizable hard spherocylinders subject to an external electric field. Using Monte Carlo simulations and free-energy calculations, we predict the phase behaviour for this model as a function of the density and electric field strength, at a fixed length-to-diameter ratio L/D = 5. The resulting phase diagram contains, in addit...

Nonequilibrium steady states in a vibrated-rod monolayer : tetratic, nematic, and smectic correlations

We study experimentally the nonequilibrium phase behaviour of a horizontal monolayer of macroscopic rods. The motion of the rods in two dimensions is driven by vibrations in the vertical direction. Aside from the control variables of packing fraction and aspect ratio that are typically explored in molecular liquid crystalline systems, due to the macroscopic size of the particles we are also abl...

Smectic, nematic, and isotropic phases in binary mixtures of thin and thick hard spherocylinders.

A second-virial Onsager theory, based on Parsons-Lee rescaling and suitably extended to deal with multicomponent systems and smectic phases, has been used to calculate the phase diagram of a collection of binary mixtures of thin and thick hard spherocylinders. In particular, two types of phase diagrams are investigated. First, a number of binary mixtures where the two components have the same t...

Non-Gaussian dynamics in smectic liquid crystals of parallel hard rods.

Using computer simulations, we studied the diffusion and structural relaxation in equilibrium smectic liquid-crystal bulk phases of parallel hard spherocylinders. These systems exhibit a non-Gaussian layer-to-layer diffusion due to the presence of periodic barriers and transient cages and show remarkable similarities with the behavior of out-of-equilibrium supercooled liquids. We detect a very ...

The liquid crystalline phase behavior of dimerizing hard spherocylinders

The phase behavior of dimerizing ~associating! rigid particles is studied by both theory and computer simulation. The model molecule comprises a hard spherocylinder of length L and diameter D with a terminal square well bonding site embedded in one of the hemispherical caps. This model mimics the properties of simple hydrogen bonding mesogens; for example, mesogens with a carboxylic acid end gr...
