Optimal Unequal Channel Protection for Multiple-Description Concatenated Codes

چکیده
Multiple-description product codes, consisting of an erasure correction row code (e.g. Reed-Solomon code) and an error correction/detection column code (e.g. convolutional codes+CRC) have recently been introduced to protect progressive transmission of multimedia contents. The significance of this approach is its compatibility with and full use of the progressive nature of the rate-distortion scalable source code, which is a much desired provision for quality of service. It provides a robust and scalable means of communication over packet-lossy networks and also extends itself nicely to hybrid scenarios consisting of a packet erasure wireline backbone and a wireless interface. This approach constructs a multiple-description, progressive code, with all descriptions having equal importance. In other words, the reconstructed signal when any K of the total N of these descriptions are received, would be the same, regardless of which packets and in which order are available at the receiver. Probably, this property of equal importance has led designers to adopt equal channel protections for all those equally important descriptions, even when facing varying channels. But this intuition is suboptimal. This paper will shed some light on the optimum channel protection strategy of the description packets for varying channels without feedback, where the channel statistics are only known to the transmitter. For a set of idealized assumptions the globally optimal channel protection assignment is found. For more practical scenarios, the approach provides a systematic means of finding a nearly optimal packet protection strategy.

Wireless Image Transmission Using Multiple - Description
This work introduces a multiple-description product code which aims at optimally generating multiple, equally-important wavelet image descriptions. The codes used are a concatenated channel code including a row (outer) code based on RCPC codes with CRC error detection and a source-channel column (inner) code consisting of the scalable SPIHT image coder and an optimized array of unequal protecti...

This work introduces a multiple-description product code which aims at optimally generating multiple, equally-important wavelet image descriptions from an image encoded by the popular SPIHT image coder. Because the SPIHT image coder is highly sensitive to errors, forward error correction is used to protect the image against bit errors occurring in the channel. The error-correction code is a con...

The unequal error correction capabilities of binary cyclic codes of composite length aye investigated. Under certain conditions, direct sums of concatenated codes have unequal error correction capabilities. By a modified Hartmann and Tzeng algorithm, it is shown that a binary cyclic code of composite length is equivalent to the direct sum of concatenated codes. With this, some binary cyclic une...

Extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) charts have been used extensively for designing concatenated coding schemes with iterative decoding. The area between the two transfer curves has been shown to approximate the gap to channel capacity. A curve-fitting procedure on EXIT charts was previously suggested for designing low density parity check codes. In this paper, we develop a similar approach f...

In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm for constructing an Unequal Error Protection (UEP) FEC code targeted towards video streaming applications. A concatenation of a set of parallel outer block codes followed by a packet interleaver and an inner block code is presented. The algorithm calculates on the fly the optimal allocation of the code rates of the inner and outer codes. When applied ...
