چکیده

cause, e.g., hookworm, by chenopodium, I have tested the value of massive doses of certain iron preparations for the intractable anaemia in some of these cases during the past few months, with marked success. Conditions that normally linger on for weeks may be improved to a couple of weeks. The preparations that have been found to be of real value are:? Liquor ferri dialysatus, the ordinary dose of which is minims 20 to 30. One can almost always commence with two drachms in an ounce of water thrice a day after meals, gradually increasing to three or four drachms for a dose; if there is any gastro-intestinal disturbance, such as diarrhoea or loss of appetite, the large dose may be diminished to two drachms or even one drachm. Should there be constipation a laxative, such as cascara, may be added. Ferri carbonas saccharatus: one may commence with drachm doses thrice a day gradually increasing the dose to ninety grains. Tincture ferri perchloride drachm one, glycerine drachm one, made up to an ounce of soda and gentian mixture. The alkali here diminishes the astringency of the iron to a great extent, and requires no addition of a laxative in most cases.?Yours, etc., B. S. JAYAWARDENE, l.r.c.p.&s. (Edin.),

Intensification of Anemia by Secondary Hyperparathyroidism in Hemodialysis Patients

The excessive amounts of parathyroid hormone in secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPTH) is suggested to interfere with normal erythropoiesis.  In SHPTH, during chronic renal failure, due to the impairment of erythropoietin synthesis, this effect is more pronounced.  In the present study the role of secondary hyperparathyroidism in the severity of anemia was evaluated in hemodialysis patients (n=3...

Experimental hepatic cirrhosis in dogs caused by chronic massive iron overload.

Starting in October 1966, 19 dogs have been subjected to massive parenteral iron loading using intravenous iron-dextran and intramuscular iron-sorbitol. Although 13 animals died, in many cases the deaths were attributable to fighting. The large doses of iron employed (up to 5.8 g/kg) were well tolerated by the surviving animals, and after 35 to 47 months five of the six survivors have developed...
