چکیده

Two previous reviews by Altay and Akar concerning the " Abnormal Hemoglobins in Turkey " appeared in the journal several years ago [1,2]. Since then, several other variants have been reported in both international and national journals. The aim of this mini-review was to compile the newly published abnormal hemoglobins in the Turkish population since these two previous papers [1,2]. During the last five years, several variants, each belonging to one family, confirmed with DNA sequencing were reported It is interesting that although almost six decades had passed since the first determination of a hemoglobin variant, there are still reports on hemoglobin variants mainly related to clinical and genetic counselling. Altay and Akar pointed out that the exact number of subjects having abnormal hemoglobins in Turkish population is not known due to the absence of a national registry system for these conditions [1,2]. So a national registry system collecting clinical and molecular data is needed. The author of this paper have no conflicts of interest, including specific financial interests, relationships, and/ or affiliations relevant to the subject matter or materials included. Table 1. Abnormal hemoglobin variants in the Turkish population published since 2007.

Abnormal Hemoglobins in Turkey.

The presence of HbS was reported in Turkey for the first time in the late fifties by Aksoy et al. This was followed by other reports by the same author revealing the presence of several other abnormal hemoglobins in Turkey. So far up to present 42 abnormal hemoglobins have been identified in the Turkish population. In addition to the studies conducted in Turkey, many European researchers report...

Hb J-Iran [beta77(EF1)His-Asp] is a rare hemoglobin variant, described first in Iran by Rahbar et al. in 1967 . To date, several abnormal hemoglobins have been described from different regions of Turkey . In Turkey, the first Hb J-Iran [beta77(EF1) His-Asp] case was reported by Arcasoy et al. . There are four reported cases from the Turkish population, mostly from our group. These reported case...

Beta globin gene cluster haplotypes of abnormal hemoglobins observed in Turkey.

Since the first observation of hemoglobin S (Hb S) in Turkey by Aksoy, the number of hemoglobin variants reported was increased. Beta globin gene cluster haplotypes are being used to determine the origin of the mutations under interest. We studied the beta globin gene cluster haplotypes for the six different abnormal hemoglobins which are Hb S, Hb D-Los Angeles, Hb G-Coushatta, Hb E, Hb E-Saska...
