Correlation of magnetic field intensities and solar wind speeds of events observed by ACE

چکیده
[1] The relationship between the magnetic field intensity and speed of solar wind events is examined using 3 years of data from the ACE spacecraft. No preselection of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) or magnetic clouds is carried out. The correlation between the field intensity and maximum speed is shown to increase significantly when |B| > 18 nT for 3 hours or more. Of the 24 events satisfying this criterion, 50% are magnetic clouds, the remaining half having no ordered field structure. A weaker correlation also exists between southward magnetic field and speed. Sixteen of the events are associated with halo CMEs leaving the Sun 2 to 4 days prior to the leading edge of the events arriving at ACE. Events selected by speed thresholds show no significant correlation, suggesting different relations between field intensity and speed for fast solar wind streams and ICMEs.

Interplanetary coronal mass ejection and ambient interplanetary magnetic field correlations during the Sun-Earth connection events of October–November 2003
[1] Magnetic field observations made during 28 October to 1 November 2003, which included two fast interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs), allow a study of correlation lengths of magnetic field parameters for two types of interplanetary (IP) structures: ICMEs and ambient solar wind. Further, they permit the extension of such investigations to the magnetosheath and to a distance along the...

We study the relationship between the speeds of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) obtained close to the Sun and in the interplanetary medium during the low solar-activity period from 2008 to 2010. We use a multi-spacecraft forward-modeling technique to fit a flux-rope-like model to white-light coronagraph images from the STEREO and SOHO spacecraft to estimate the geometrical configuration, propagat...

متن کاملEvolution of an Interplanetary Shock in the Magnetosheath
We have prepared a short case study of a propagation of an interplanetary shock through the solar wind and magnetosheath. For this particular case, magnetic field and plasma measurements from four spacecraft in the solar wind and one in the magnetosheath are available. It allows us to determine both local and global shock planes and shock propagation speeds in the solar wind as well as local sh...
متن کاملMagnetic field inversions at 1 AU: Comparisons between mapping predictions and observations
Large-scale magnetic field configurations are important for the transport of solar wind strahl electrons, which are suprathermal and directed along the field outward from the Sun. Strahl electrons are routinely used to infer not only the field configurations between the Sun and Earth but also local field structures, i.e., field inversions, where the magnetic field is locally folded back or inve...
