Transport properties in small-scale coastal flows: relative dispersion from VHF radar measurements in the Gulf of La Spezia

چکیده
Lagrangian transport characteristics in the Gulf of La Spezia, a 5 × 10-km area along the western coast of Italy, are investigated using data collected from a very high frequency (VHF) radar system with 250 m and 30-min resolution and two clusters of Coastal Dynamics Experiment surface drifters during 2 weeks in the summer of 2007. The surface drifters are found to follow the temporal and spatial evolution of the finite-scale Lyapunov exponents (FSLEs) computed by the VHF radar, indicating the precision of both the radar measurements and the diagnostic FSLE in mapping accurately the transport pathways. In light of this agreement, an analysis of the relative dispersion is conducted. It is found that the average FSLE value varies within a narrow range of 4 day−1 ≤ λ ≤ 7 day−1 and displays an exponential regime over the entire extent of the measurements. The dynamical implication is that relative dispersion is controlled nonlocally, namely by slow, persistent, energetic mesoscale structures as Responsible Editor: Pierre De Mey A. C. Haza · T. M. The value of the exponent is about an order of magnitude larger than those found in previous modeling studies and analysis of SCULP data in the Gulf of Mexico but somewhat smaller than that estimated from CLIMODE drifters in the Gulf Stream region. Scaling of the FSLE using a metric of resolved gradients of the Eulerian fields in the form of a positive Okubo–Weiss criterion is useful, but not as precise as in modeling studies. The horizontal flow convergence is found to have a small yet tangible effect on relative dispersion.

Estimation of salinity, heat and buoyancy budgets of the inflow coastal current into the Persian Gulf from the Strait of Hormuz
An analytical model for a coastal boundary current was used to investigate heat and salt budget of exchange flows in the Persian Gulf as a marginal sea. Coastal boundary currents exchange heat and freshwater with the mosphere and the offshore waters. As heat and salinity fluxes caused by air-sea interaction and eddy activities, different temperature and salinity associated with boundary current...

متن کاملIdentification and study of some ecological indicators of Scyphomedusae from coastal waters of Khuzestan and Hormozgan (the North of Persian Gulf)
Coastal waters of Khuzestan and Hormozgan provinces are very important in the fisheries industry. Due to of direct and indirect impacts of the Jellyfish on the dynamic of fish larvae and zooplankton, study of their population is very important. So that in this study scyphomedusae were collected in summer and winter of 2015 from 6 stations of coastal waters of Khuzestan and Hormozgan. Sampling w...

Some reproduction characteristics of keeled mullet, Liza klunzingeri, were studied during Apr. 2003 to Feb. 2004 in Khuzestan waters of the Persian Gulf. A total of 836 samples were monthly collected from two fish landings of Bahrekan and Hendijan; 727 specimens were studied from point of sex determination, and 60 specimens were studied from the fecundity point of view. This species was found t...
متن کاملA Three-dimensional Numerical Modeling of Contaminant Dispersion from Arvand Rood River into the Persian Gulf
The Persian Gulf is an important economic and geo-political region. Owing to its oil and gas resources, it is one of the busiest waterways in the world. There are many operating oil wells in the northern part of the Persian Gulf . As a result, the risk of contaminant dispersion is high. The deliberate discharge of 6.3 million barrels of crude oil during the 1991 war against Kuwait in this regio...
