چکیده

Ductile iron replaced grey cast iron as pipe material in the early 1970s. It has been estimated that almost half of all new water mains in North America are ductile iron. The main cause of the structural deterioration of all metallic mains is external corrosion, which is induced by environmental and operational conditions. Internal corrosion, on the other hand, can cause significant functional (hydraulic, water quality) deterioration within the distribution system. Methods for external corrosion protection include passive (coatings, wraps, etc.), active (cathodic protection) or a combination of both. Successes and failures have been reported on the usage of various methods under different conditions and circumstances. This paper provides the state of the practice in corrosion protection of ductile iron water mains, and describes case histories that have been reported from around the world. Some conclusions are drawn as to the suitability of methods to specific circumstances.

Fuzzy Expert System to Assess Corrosion of Cast/Ductile Iron Pipes from Backfill Properties

Several factors may contribute to the structural failure of cast and ductile iron water mains, the most important of which is considered to be corrosion. The ANSI/AWWA C105/A21.5–99 10-point scoring (10-P) method is commonly used to predict corrosivity potential of a given soil sample using certain soil properties. The 10-P and other scoring methods use binary logic to classify the soil either ...

Three dimensional mapping of corrosion pits in cast iron pipe using the remote field effect

The remote field effect is an electromagnetic method for inspecting pipes and tubing. It has recently been commercialised as a technique for inspecting gray cast iron and ductile iron water mains. However, commercial tools provide information on pits depths in the pipe and overall wall loss. Models of the mechanical behaviour of cast iron pipe also require information on pit width and length. T...
