چکیده
Commercial artificial insemination (AI) is arguably one of the greatest animal biotechnologies introduced in the 20 century. The benefits of improved genetics and reduced disease transmission have been readily recognized and accepted by the dairy producer, and at present, approximately 70% of the US dairy cattle population are bred by AI. Since the introduction of commercial AI in the early 1940s, the US dairy cattle population has declined from over 25.6 million to only 9.2 million head, while total annual milk production has increased from 53.1 billion kg to 70.8 billion kg in 1997 (USDA, 1961 & 1999) and represents a 369% increase in production efficiency. Although the dairy industry has readily adapted and benefited from this tremendous male biotechnology, <10% of the 33 million beef cows in the US are presently bred by AI.

Many conditions affect the reproductive health of the beef herd, including nutrition, bull fertility, and environmental stresses. Perhaps none have the potential to create more significant losses than infectious diseases. Infectious diseases affecting reproduction can create losses all throughout the reproductive cycle by decreasing ovulation rates, fertilization rates, embryonic survival rates...

Introduction The decline in fertility reported from 1960 to early 2000’s (Lucy, 2001) was the motive for prolific research in dairy cows, which in instance lead to identification of multiple culprit factors for this impaired reproductive performance in dairy cattle. (Norman et al., 2009; Santos et al., 2004). Reduced fertilization, embryonic survival, and high prevalence of anovulation in dairy...

Traits used for selecting replacement heifers and feed resources used to develop replacements can have a major influence on long-term profitability of a cattle operation. The direct expense of either purchasing or developing heifers is often obvious for producers, however, the impact the management system used for rearing heifers and selection criteria have on lifetime productivity is much less...

Introduction Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) virus and Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus are two of the major viral pathogens responsible for respiratory disease in cattle. These viral agents can be associated with pathology in the respiratory, immunologic, neurologic, hematologic, lymphatic, and reproductive organ systems (Grooms et al., 1998). Infections of cattle with BVD virus and/o...
متن کاملDoes Disposition Affect Reproduction in Beef Cattle?
Disposition has been shown to significantly affect feed intake and growth rates of beef cattle. However, little research has evaluated the effects of poor disposition, and methods to improve this trait, on reproductive function of beef females. Thus, two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of disposition and acclimation to human handling on reproductive function of mature cows a...
