Performance Evaluation of Wrist Guards Under Dynamic Testing

چکیده
Introduction: Snowboarding, both as an outdoor sport and cultural trend, has grown tremendously over the past three decades. As a result, the number of trauma related injuries and emergency room visits have risen significantly. According to the literature, more than 50% of upper extremity injuries involve the wrist. The primary mechanism of injury is a backwards fall onto outstretched hands, resulting in hyperextension of the wrist. Thus, protective gear in the form of wrist guards has evolved as a means of decreasing the frequency of wrist injury. Clinical and cadaveric studies have supported the use of wrist guards for snowboarding. With the lack of standardization, however, there exists large variation in design and application among commercially available wrist guards. Furthermore, there is a need for mechanical and biomechanical data to assess the performance of such devices. Previous studies have evaluated the performance of wrist guards under impact loading. Though impact data may be useful, it is our opinion that wrist guards undergo low load fatiguing followed by occasional impact loading. Thus, the slow loading of wrist guards serves as a clinically relevant model for the determination of both fatigue and failure when impact conditions arise. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the fatigue performance of commercially available wrist guards. Materials and Methods: Three (3) commercially available wrist guard designs (Figure 1: A, B, C) were selected for evaluation. These included ProTec IPS wrist guard, Santa Fe, CA (N=5), Burton RED Impact wrist guard, Truckee, CA (N=5) and Flexmeter wrist guard, NY, NY (N=5).

Performance Evaluation of Dynamic Modulus Predictive Models for Asphalt Mixtures
Dynamic modulus characterizes the viscoelastic behavior of asphalt materials and is the most important input parameter for design and rehabilitation of flexible pavements using Mechanistic–Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG). Laboratory determination of dynamic modulus is very expensive and time consuming. To overcome this challenge, several predictive models were developed to determine dyn...
متن کاملShock-absorbing effects of various padding conditions in improving efficacy of wrist guards.
The use of wrist guards has limited efficacy in preventing wrist injuries during falling in many sports activities. The objectives of this study were to measure the ground reaction force of the hand under simulated impact of the forearm and hand complex with different padding conditions of wrist guards and to analyze their impact force attenuation and maximum energy absorption for improved func...
متن کاملSnowboard wrist guards--use, efficacy, and design. A systematic review.
The popularity of snowboarding has brought awareness to injuries sustained during the sport. Wrist injuries are among the most common injuries, and there is an interest in using protective equipment to prevent these injuries. The purpose of this study was to review the literature on wrist guard use, injury prevention, the biomechanical effects of wrist guards, and the various types of wrist gua...

OBJECTIVE To systematically review studies that examined the effectiveness of wrist guards in preventing wrist injuries among snowboarders. DATA SOURCE MEDLINE (1966-March 2005), EMBASE (1988-March 2005), Cochrane (2005 Issue 1), Sport Discus (1975-March 2005) were searched using variations of the term "snowboard." PubMED was searched for the year 2005 to capture any recently published studie...
متن کاملDo wrist guards have the potential to protect against wrist injuries in bicycling, micro scooter riding, and monkey bar play?
OBJECTIVE To test the potential of wrist guards to prevent wrist injury in recreational activities that require good grip strength and hand dexterity. METHODS Forty eight children aged 5-8 years from one Melbourne school volunteered for tests chosen or devised following a review of the literature on the effects of orthoses use and hand function. RESULTS Wrist guard wearing significantly deg...
