چکیده

We present spectroscopic observations of diffuse ionized gas (DIG) in M33 near the H II region NGC 604. We present the first detection of [O I] λ6300 in the DIG of M33, one of the critical lines for distinguishing photo-from shock ionization models. We measure [O I]/Hα in the range of 0.04 to 0.10 and an increase in this ratio with decreasing emission measure. Our measurements of [S II]/Hα and [N II]/Hα also rise with decreasing emission measure, while our [O III]/Hβ measurements remain fairly constant. We have one tentative detection of He I in the region of brightest emission measure, with a ratio of He I/Hα= 0.033 ± 0.019, indicating that the helium is at least partially ionized. We compare our observed emission line ratios to photoionization models and find that field star ionization models do not fit our data well. Leaky H II region models are consistent with our data, without the need to invoke additional ionization mechanisms to fit our [O I] or [O III] measurements. The closest large H II region is NGC 604 and is therefore a likely candidate for the source of the ionizing photons for the gas in this region.

Spectroscopy of diffuse ionized gas in halos of selected edge - on galaxies ?

In order to examine the excitation and ionization mechanism of extraplanar diffuse ionized gas (DIG) we have obtained optical longslit spectra of seven edge-on spiral galaxies. In four objects the brightest emission lines can be traced out to distances of typically 1.5 kpc above the disk. For NGC 1963 and NGC 3044 line ratios such as [N ii] λ6583/Hα or [S ii] λ6717/Hα as well as [O iii] λ5007/H...

Extraplanar diffuse ionized gas in a small sample of nearby edge-on galaxies

We present narrowband Hα imaging data of a small survey of nearby edge-on spiral galaxies, aiming at the detection of ‘extraplanar’ diffuse ionized gas (DIG). A few of our studied edge–on spirals show signs of disk–halo interaction (DHI), where extended line emission far above the galactic plane of these galaxies is detected. In some cases an extraplanar diffuse ionized gas (eDIG) layer is disc...

Sparsepak Observations of Diffuse Ionized Gas Halo Kinematics in Ngc 891

We present WIYN SparsePak observations of the diffuse ionized gas (DIG) halo of NGC 891. Preliminary results of an analysis of the halo velocity field reveal a clear gradient of the azimuthal velocity with z which agrees with results for the neutral gas. The magnitude of the gradient has been determined, using two independent methods, to be approximately 15 km s kpc. 1. Observations and Data Re...

Long slit spectroscopy of diffuse ionized gas in NGC 55 ⋆

Spectroscopic measurements of emission line ratios and velocities are presented for ionized gas across the central plane of NGC 55, a late-type galaxy in the Sculptor group. The low metallicity in NGC 55 leads to relatively low line ratios of [S ii]/Hα and [N ii]/Hα for H ii regions as well as the diffuse ionized gas. These are the first spectroscopical measurements of line ratios in ionized ga...

Spectrophotometry of HII Regions, Diffuse Ionized Gas and Supernova Remnants in M31: The Transition from Photo- to Shock-Ionization

We present results of KPNO 4-m optical spectroscopy of discrete emissionline nebulae and regions of diffuse ionized gas (DIG) in M31. Long-slit spectra of 16 positions in the NE half of M31 were obtained over a 5-15 kpc range in radial distance from the center of the galaxy with special attention to the annulus of high star formation between 8 and 12 kpc. Slit positions were chosen such that se...
