Arima, Kei (University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan), and Tetuo Oka. Cyanide resistance in Achromobacter. I. Induced formation of cytochrome a(2) and its role in cyanide-resistant respiration. J. Bacteriol. 90:734-743. 1965.-By following the cytochrome concentrations during the growth cycle and under various conditions (aerobic, aerobic plus KCN, reduced aeration, anaerobic plus NaNO(3)) in Achromobacter strain D, a close relationship between the formation of cytochrome a(2) (and a(1)) and the difficulty of oxygen utilization was demonstrated. Cytochrome o, which was the only oxidase found in aerobic log-phase cells, was present in bacterial cells grown under various conditions; the amount present had no relation to the degree of cyanide resistance. On the other hand, cytochrome a(2) (and a(1)) was inducible, and a close relation was observed between the amount of cytochrome and resistance to cyanide. Spectrophotometric observations indicated that, among the cytochromes present in resistant cells, cytochrome a(2) could be oxidized most easily in the presence of cyanide and that cytochrome b(1) could be oxidized without the oxidation of cytochrome a(1). We concluded that cytochrome a(2) is a cyanide-resistant oxidase capable of catalyzing the oxidation of cytochromes in the presence of cyanide. Cytochrome a(2) is also resistant to azide, an inhibitor of cytochrome oxidase.

Salicylic Acid induces cyanide-resistant respiration in tobacco cell-suspension cultures.
Cyanide-resistant, alternative respiration in Nicotiana tabacum L. cv Xanthi-nc was analyzed in liquid suspension cultures using O(2) uptake and calorimetric measurements. In young cultures (4-8 d after transfer), cyanide inhibited O(2) uptake by up to 40% as compared to controls. Application of 20 mum salicylic acid (SA) to young cells increased cyanide-resistant O(2) uptake within 2 h. Develo...
متن کاملEFFECT OF CYANIDE IN CARDIOPLEGIC SOLUTION ON ISOLATED RAT HEART FUNCTION
It has been known that cardiomyocytes possess a remarkable ability to downregulate their energy expenditure on restricted 02 supply. However it has also been speculated that an ability to suppress aerobic respiration and ATP utilization could be a protective response to prolonged hypoxia. Having the role of the cytochrome oxidase enzyme in mind, one can ask if its inhibition by using cyani...
متن کاملCyanide acclimation in willow (Salix babylonica L.), a prospect for the phytoremediation of cyanide
Phytoremediation counts as a major method for future which essentially needs resistance to contaminating agents. We pretreated the plants (Salix babylonica, as a model plant in phytoremediation of polluted waters) by sodium cyanide (0, 3 and 5 mg CN- L-1) to induce resistance with regard to acclimation and then examined their resistance to higher concentrations of cyanide. Accordingly, some of ...

متن کاملRelative Contribution of Cytochrome-mediated and Cyanide-resistant Electron Transport in Fresh and Aged Potato Slices.
The respiration of fresh potato (Solanum tuberosum, var. Russet Burbank) slices is predominantly cyanide-sensitive whether in the presence or absence of uncoupler. By contrast, the wound-induced respiration which develops in thin slices with aging is cyanide-resistant, and in the presence of cyanide, sensitive to chlorobenzhydroxamic acid, a selective inhibitor of the cyanide-resistant respirat...
