چکیده

Although researchers have begun making significant inroads into understanding the genetic and biological basis for autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and other neurodevelopmental disorders, it's been estimated that environmental factors could account for just over half the risk of developing ASDs. 1 In this issue of EHP, researchers have used data from 1,767 women in the Nurses' Health Study (NHS) II to study exposure to particulate matter (PM) as one potential environmental risk factor for ASDs. 2 In one of the first reports of a relationship between air pollution and ASDs, investigators in California found associations between estimated exposures to airborne heavy metals and other pollutants and risk of ASDs. 3 Later studies using the same exposure models as the California study reported links between multiple hazardous air pollutants and ASDs in North Carolina and West Virginia, 4 and a U.S.-wide study had similar findings.

Simulating green tax effects on pollution reduction, mortality and morbidity costs in Iran

The direct association between air pollution and morbidity and mortality rates has been proved. This major environmental risk factor has been mainly due to extensive use of fossil fuels. Increasing pollution caused by fossil fuels can threaten human health. This study simulated the effect of green taxes on Iran’s health indicators, i.e., mortality and morbidity. We used a Computable General Equ...

Weeding Out Risk Factors? Study Reports No Association between Prenatal Air Pollution and Autism

In utero exposures to certain toxic constituents of traffic-related air pollution have been linked to neurological impairments. Recent studies have addressed whether exposures to such air toxicants might be environmental risk factors for autism spectrum disorders (ASDs)— developmental disabilities that can involve rigid, repetitive behaviors and impairments in communication and social interacti...

Review of studies on air quality status and its health effects in Iran

Background and Objective: Air pollution is a leading environmental risk factor on health and it is the major cause of death and disease at global level. Air pollution has been shown to have a significant share in the non-communicable diseases (NCDs) burden. After smoking, it is the second cause of deaths due to NCDs, associated with an increased risk of developing acute and chronic diseases and...

Echoes of Autism? Inhaled Ultrafine Particles and Brain Changes in Mice

Epidemiologica l evidence has raised the possibility that exposure to air pollution could be a risk factor for autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and schizophrenia. For example, one recent study of children living in Ca li fornia reported that those exposed to the highest levels of traffic-related air pollution during pregnancy and in the first year of life were twice as likely to develop ASDs as...
