چکیده

Let 1 p 1 and W : R ! (0;1) be continuous. Does W admit a Jackson Theorem in Lp? That is, does there exist a sequence f ng 1 n=1 of positive numbers with limit 0 such that inf deg(P ) n k (f P )W kLp(R) n k f W kLp(R) for all absolutely continuous f with k f 0W kLp(R) …nite? We show that such a theorem is true i¤ lim x!1 W 1 Lq [0;x] kWkLp[x;1) = 0; where q is the conjugate parameter of p. In an earlier paper, we considered weights admitting a Jackson theorem for all 1 p 1:

New moduli of smoothness: weighted DT

We introduce new moduli of smoothness for functions f ∈ Lp[−1, 1]∩Cr−1(−1, 1), 1 ≤ p ≤ ∞, r ≥ 1, that have an (r − 1)st locally absolutely continuous derivative in (−1, 1), and such that φrf (r) is in Lp[−1, 1], where φ(x) = (1 − x2)1/2. These moduli are equivalent to certain weighted DT moduli, but our definition is more transparent and simpler. In addition, instead of applying these weighted ...

A Survey of Weighted Polynomial Approximation with Exponential Weights

Let W : R → (0, 1] be continuous. Bernstein’s approximation problem, posed in 1924, deals with approximation by polynomials in the weighted uniform norm f → ‖fW‖L∞(R). The qualitative form of this problem was solved by Achieser, Mergelyan, and Pollard, in the 1950’s. Quantitative forms of the problem were actively investigated starting from the 1960’s. We survey old and recent aspects of this t...

Polynomial approximation with doubling weights having finitely many zeros and singularities

We prove matching direct and inverse theorems for (algebraic) polynomial approximation with doubling weights w having finitely many zeros and singularities (i.e., points where w becomes infinite) on an interval and not too “rapidly changing” away from these zeros and singularities. This class of doubling weights is rather wide and, in particular, includes the classical Jacobi weights, generaliz...

BESOV SPACES ON DOMAINS IN Rd

We study Besov spaces 5°(LP(Í2)), 0<p,q,a<oo,on domains Í2 in Rd . We show that there is an extension operator W which is a bounded mapping from B°(LP(Ü.)) onto B%(Lp(Rd)). This is then used to derive various properties of the Besov spaces such as interpolation theorems for a pair of B%(Lp(il)), atomic decompositions for the elements of 5°(Lp(f2)), and a description of the Besov spaces by means...
