چکیده

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as superoxide radical anion, hydroperoxyl radical are generated in cells from byproducts of metabolism and responsible for the development of a wide number of degenerative diseases such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetic, cirrhosis and several cancers1. All organisms have their own antioxidant defense system to protect them against free radical damage by enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase and catalase or compounds such as ascorbic acid, tocopherol and glutathione 2. However, our body system sometimes cannot work efficiently that lead to unavoidable damage caused by oxidation. As a result, consumption of additional antioxidants through herbs, foods or supplements (phytochemicals) are beneficial to defense against the harmful ROS3. A recent investigation on the beneficial effects of fruits, vegetables and spices containing high phytochemical antioxidants were carried out by groups of researchers 4-5 concluded that the crude extracts with antioxidant properties are bioprotective in nature and are therefore valuable in the food industry for longer shelf life. Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), Butylated hdroxytoluene (BHT) and Tert-butylated hydroxyquinone (TBHQ) are the common synthetic antioxidants to prevent oxidative process6 that have been used in food industry since 1940 but the trend currently is to move towards natural antioxidants as an alternative source7-8 revealed that BHA and BHT were found to promote tumor formation, therefore the use of a natural antioxidant source become crucial.

Evaluation of antioxidant activity and characterization of phenolic constituents of Phyllanthus amarus root.

The antioxidant property of the 70% aqueous ethanol extract of Phyllanthus amarus roots and its ether-soluble, ethyl acetate-soluble, and aqueous fractions were investigated by various in vitro assays. The root extracts showed higher DPPH, hydroxyl, superoxide, and nitric oxide radical scavenging and reducing power activity. Among all the samples, the ethyl acetate-soluble fraction demonstrated...

Comparison of the antioxidant and cytotoxic activities of Phyllanthus virgatus and Phyllanthus amarus extracts.

OBJECTIVE To determine the antioxidant activity and cytotoxicity of Phyllanthus virgatus crude extract compared to Phyllanthus amarus. METHODS Phenolic contents of the hydromethanolic extracts were measured using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl hydrate free radical scavenging and antilipid peroxidation assays. Cytotoxicity on hu...

Hypoglycemic activity of ethanolic leaf extract of Phyllanthus amarus in alloxan induced diabetic mice

Phyllanthus amarus is an indigenous medicinal plant, with a folk reputation as hypoglycemic agent in Central and Southern India. In the present investigation hypoglycemic activity of ethanolic leaf extract of Phyllanthus amarus was evaluated using alloxan induced hyperglycemic mice. Blood glucose levels of all the mice of each group were tested before the treatments on fasting mice and then tes...

Phyllanthus amarus suppresses hepatitis B virus by interrupting interactions between HBV enhancer I and cellular transcription factors.

The Phyllanthus amarus plant suppresses HBV mRNA transcription in vitro and exhibits therapeutic potential in chronic HBV carriers, although further work is necessary to define its mechanism of action. Analysis in HuH-7 cells with transfected plasmids using a luciferase reporter showed that P. amarus specifically inhibited HBV enhancer I activity. To identify the mechanism of this HBV enhancer ...
