UROPS Project abstract: Quantum storage in a decoherence-free subspace

چکیده
A system of three spin12 atoms allows the construction of a qubit in the subspace of total angular momentum j = 12 that is not a ected by any magnetic eld activity on the magnetic moments of the atoms, provided that all three atoms experience the same magnetic eld. If, however, there are stray elds of di erent direction or strength at the sites of the atoms, the qubit will slowly decohere. It is the objective of this study to examine the decoherence process and to establish the conditions, under which the lifetime of the qubit is su ciently long for practical uses.

Realization of universal ion-trap quantum computation with decoherence-free qubits.
Any residual coupling of a quantum computer to the environment results in computational errors. Encoding quantum information in a so-called decoherence-free subspace provides means to avoid these errors. Despite tremendous progress in employing this technique to extend memory storage times by orders of magnitude, computation within such subspaces has been scarce. Here, we demonstrate the realiz...
متن کاملA decoherence-free quantum memory using trapped ions.
We demonstrate a decoherence-free quantum memory of one qubit. By encoding the qubit into the decoherence-free subspace (DFS) of a pair of trapped 9Be+ ions, we protect the qubit from environment-induced dephasing that limits the storage time of a qubit composed of a single ion. We measured the storage time under ambient conditions and under interaction with an engineered noisy environment and ...
متن کاملUniversal quantum computation with electronic qubits in decoherence-free subspace
We investigate how to carry out universal quantum computation deterministically with free electrons in decoherence-free subspace by using polarizing beam splitters, charge detectors, and single-spin rotations. Quantum information in our case is encoded in spin degrees of freedom of the electron-pairs which construct a decoherence-free subspace. We design building blocks for two noncommutable si...
متن کاملUsing continuous measurement to protect a universal set of quantum gates within a perturbed decoherence-free subspace
We consider a universal set of quantum gates encoded within a perturbed decoherence-free subspace of four physical qubits. Using second-order perturbation theory and a measuring device modeled by an infinite set of harmonic oscillators, simply coupled to the system, we show that continuous observation of the coupling agent induces inhibition of the decoherence due to spurious perturbations. We ...
متن کاملS-matrix approach to the construction of decoherence-free subspaces
Analyzing the S matrices associated with a host of relaxation processes allows one, using extra ‘‘chaperon’’ states, to construct a decoherence-free subspace ~DFS! that is immune to the effects of relaxation. The method does not require knowledge of the system-bath Hamiltonian, which is rarely known. Thus, a DFS can be constructed directly from experimentally determined relaxation and dephasing...
