چکیده

[1] An ocean model is used to test the idea that sea surface DC behaves as a thermocline proxy in the eastern equatorial Pacific. The ORCA2 model, which includes DC as a passive tracer, has been forced with reanalysis fluxes over 1948–1999, and the output is compared with a previously reported Galapagos DC record. The model reproduces the abrupt increase in the seasonally minimum DC in 1976/77 found in the data. This increase is associated with neither a shift of thermocline depth over the NINO3 region, nor a change in the relative proportion of Northern/Southern source waters. Rather, it is due to a decrease in the SubAntarctic ModeWater (SAMW) component of the upwelling water, thereby representing a decrease in entrainment of water from below the base of the directly ventilated thermocline.

Synchronous deglacial thermocline and deep-water ventilation in the eastern equatorial Pacific

The deep ocean is most likely the primary source of the radiocarbon-depleted CO2 released to the atmosphere during the last deglaciation. While there are well-documented millennial scale Δ14C changes during the most recent deglaciation, most marine records lack the resolution needed to identify more rapid ventilation events. Furthermore, potential age model problems with marine Δ14C records may...

Radiocarbon variability in the western equatorial Pacific inferred from a highresolution coral record from Nauru Island

We have generated a high resolution coral A14C record spanning the last 50 years to document the seasonal and interannual redistribution of surface waters in the western tropical Pacific. Prebomb (1947-1956) A14C values average -63%0 and have a total range of 30%0. Values begin to increase in 1957, reaching a maximum of 137%o in mid-1983. Large interannual variability of up to 80%0 closely foll...

Lecture 2 ENSO toy models

Let us consider first a heuristic derivation of an equation for the sea surface temperature in the East Pacific, which will be followed by a more rigorous derivation in the following sections. Assume that the East Pacific SST affects the atmospheric heating and thus the central Pacific wind speed. The resulting wind stress, in turn, excites equatorial Kelvin and Rossby ocean waves. These waves ...

Increased reservoir ages and poorly ventilated deep waters inferred in the glacial Eastern Equatorial Pacific

Consistent evidence for a poorly ventilated deep Pacific Ocean that could have released its radiocarbon-depleted carbon stock to the atmosphere during the last deglaciation has long been sought. Such evidence remains lacking, in part due to a paucity of surface reservoir age reconstructions required for accurate deep-ocean ventilation age estimates. Here we combine new radiocarbon data from the...

Hemispheric Asymmetry in the Ventilated Thermocline of the Tropical Pacific

To understand sources of variability in the eastern equatorial Pacific, a region integral to modulating global temperatures, the waters upwelling from the Equatorial Undercurrent (EUC) are characterized. Past work is updated using temperature and salinity measurements from the Argo array and current measurements from Tropical Atmosphere Ocean (TAO) buoys. A larger hemispheric asymmetry is found...
