Practical Saturated Thickness: a More Realistic Measure of Groundwater Availability in Heterogeneous Aquifers

چکیده
Ground-water availability from the High Plains aquifer in Southwest Kansas Ground-water Management District 3 (GMD 3) is declining as it is elsewhere in the western part of the state (Figure 1). Water-use density, defined as the annual amount of water pumped from the aquifer per unit of land area, is high over much of the District and greatly exceeds annual recharge (McMahon et al., 2003). Subsurface data indicate that the thickness, composition, and properties of the aquifer are highly variable. These factors argue for a tailored approach to manage the remaining supplies in the aquifer. A key element in determining the best method to subdivide the High Plains aquifer into smaller units for management purposes is the geospatial distribution of permeable, water-yielding zones. One approach to characterizing the distribution of permeable zones within the High Plains aquifer is to mine the information contained in the thousands of drillers’ logs of test holes and production wells drilled for water supply in GMD 3. The sheer abundance of these logs makes them an attractive source of information even though many geologists and hydrogeologists downplay their value.

Groundwater whirls in heterogeneous and anisotropic layered aquifers
Groundwater flow is affected by heterogeneity in the anisotropy. Our investigations started with some simple numerical experiments consisting of one or two homogeneous anisotropic blocks. Three-dimensional pathlines in such models have the shape of spirals; bundles of spiralling pathlines were termed 'groundwater whirls'. The present research also deals with hypothetical models of stratified aq...

متن کاملEvaluation of Groundwater Vulnerability Using Data Mining Technique in Hashtgerd Plain
Groundwater vulnerability assessment would be one of the effective informative methods to provide a basis for determining source of pollution. Vulnerability maps are employed as an important solution in order to handle entrance of pollution into the aquifers. A common way to develop groundwater vulnerability map is DRASTIC. Meanwhile, application of the method is not easy for any aquifer due to...

A block-centered, finite difference model of two-dimensional groundwater flow yields velocity values at the midpoints of interfaces between adjacent blocks. Method of characteristics, random walk and particle-tracking models of solute transport equire velocities at arbitrary particle locations within the finite difference grid. Particle path lines and travel times are sensitive to the spatial i...
متن کاملPredicting flow and transport in highly heterogeneous alluvial aquifers
Successful prediction of groundwater flow and solute transport through highly heterogeneous aquifers has remained elusive due to the limitations of methods to characterize hydraulic conductivity (K) and generate realistic stochastic fields from such data. As a result, many studies have suggested that the classical advective-dispersive equation (ADE) cannot reproduce such transport behavior. Her...
